At 162K miles my money is on the wheel bearing. You'll know for sure in a few more weeks as Spring is around the corner and I'm sure you'll be swapping out those winter shoes for something a bit more fun.

Firstly thanks again to Taz, for all the effort on this

Second, it's going to before than 2 weeks here in MN before the winter tires can be changed.

Imola balanced the wheels on my 40th late last year, and commented that the front wheel bearing was showing signs of wear at 45k, I was surprised by this as it isn't particularly noisy, going to look at it once it's warm enough to hold wrenches without getting frost bite

No indication of what number car it is is listed in the ad, but another 40AE is for sale in Scottsdale (and showing up in Dallas?): http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/4336029330.html

Thanks. I have to stay on top of the vehicle listings because once these things sell they may not surface for years, if ever. I've got about 30 different vehicle sale websites and owners forums around the world that I'm constantly searching. Most of the US dealers are good about getting me the numbers if they're not stated in the ads or shown in photos. The US private sellers and forum owners are pretty good, too. The foreign sellers and forum owners are the real challenge. If it's a foreign Porsche dealership they always reply, but the foreign independents and private individuals many times don't. Either way, list is growing nearly every day.

FYI - came across this

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4367446192.html

Not sure if worth the asking price - $34k with 49k miles + not sure if the wheels have been really looked after. Just in case anyone is interested.

According to my records that car, no. 1163, is being sold by its second owner. It was for sale at Paramount in Hickory, NC in Jan 2013 with 46,801 miles (Paramount was the original selling dealer and the original owner who had it up until Jan 2013 was from North Carolina). Looks like the current owner/seller put barely 3K miles on it in about a year. The first pic is from Paramount's ad and the second is from the current seller's ad. You're right about the wheels - the center caps appear to be originals but the wheels are either refinished (look at the insides - they don't have the original finish, either) or they're not the original shot-blasted and polished Carrera II lightweights but, instead, standard ones.

There are a bunch of 40AEs listed for sale in the US right now - here's the list I have (recall that the numbers starting with a "U" refer to the cars in the registry file for which their limited edition numbers are yet unknown):

0211 - Park Place Porsche (Dallas, TX): $37,900 with 41,205 miles
0302 - eCarLink (Addison, TX): no price listed, 45,000 miles
0404 - Park Place Ltd (Bellevue, WA): $34,950 with 75,574 miles
0418 - Jordan Motorcars (San Antonio, TX): $32,950 with 73,779 miles
0441 - Auto Haus Motors (Burnt Hills, NY): $40,977 with 14,920 miles
0481 - Barrier Porsche (Bellevue, WA): no price listed, 5,828 miles
0522 - (private seller) (Philadelphia, PA): 40,000 obo with 33,000 miles
0523 - (private seller)(York, PA): $39,900 with 25,512 miles
0536 - Global Motor Sports (Houston, TX)("rebuilt, rebuildable & reconstructed title"): $29,995 with 44,268 miles
0546 - (private seller) (Irvine, CA): $28,999 with 61,000 miles
0592 - (private seller)(Los Angeles, CA): $30,000 with 54,000 miles
0656 - (private seller)(Phoenix, AZ): $35,350 with 85,000 miles
0678 - Auto Sports of North Carolina: $25,980 with 105,955 miles
0759 - (private seller)(Tucson, AZ)(has 3.8L engine from Flat6): $31,750 with 85,000 miles
0829 - Specialized German (Rancho Cordova, CA)(parting out car)
0940 - Motorgroup LLC (Portland, OR): $44,995 with 24,165 miles
0963 - JFR & Assoc., Inc. (Littleton, CO): $39,000 with 48,020 miles
1143 - Porsche of North Scottsdale (AZ): $41,900 with 29,068 miles
1163 - (private seller)(Raleigh, NC): $34,000 with 49,746 miles
1201 - Carlsen Porsche (Redwood City, CA): $43,900 with 37,053 miles
1203 - sds911 (Rennlist - may no longer be for sale): $41,795 with 58,000 miles
1211 - (private seller) (Henderson, NV): $46,000 with 5,400 miles
1513 - (private seller)(Scottsdale, AZ): $36,500 with 40,200 miles
U373 - (private seller)(Sacramento, CA): $39,000 with 21,000 miles (see note below on this one)

About U373 - this car has been for sale since July 2013. I found what I thought was the owner's email address and over the past 8 months sent a few email requests for the car's number, with no reply. The car showed up on Autotrader last week so I thought that I'd try calling the owner to ask. When I did, as I was introducing myself, he interrupted me saying that he hadn't looked at the car's number in a long time and that my asking for the car's number was not his "problem", then he hung up. He's right, it isn't his problem, but I have to say that every person with whom I've ever corresponded about their car's number has met my request enthusiastically, even the dealers. Obviously this guy received my emails but didn't have the courtesy to reply, even to say he preferred not to give the number. I'd have been disappointed but would have understood and at least appreciated the reply. Anyway, I just want to express to all of you how much I appreciate your help when I've contacted you and when you've posted info about cars you've found.

Finally (and sorry for the long post), our German friend David (40_Jahre_911 here on RL and DPA_911 on pff.de) has spent countless hours putting together a website dedicated to the 40AEs. I've been working with him and we hope that it will be up and running soon. He or I will post here when it's ready and I'll email those whose email addresses I have. It's really a nice tribute to our wonderful cars.

Stay tuned, and, again, thanks for your support of the registry project.

Default Seeing double

Had the pleasure today of spending the afternoon with fellow 40AE owner and RL'er jniemeyer (no. 0773). A brisk ride on the winding roads along the Mississippi River found our two 40AEs stretching their legs after the long rough winter. Despite having seen hundreds of 40AEs in my registry research I've never before seen one other than mine in person. What fun! Enjoy the pics (mine is no. 0711 - plate "40 JAHR").
