Talking No. 0536

Thanks for the heads up. I really appreciate it when folks point these out to me. I tried to use the link you provided but it didn't work; regardless, I know which car you mean and it is on the registry. It's no. 0536 and is for sale on eBay, too (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-...t_27540wt_1173). For what it's worth, that car was damaged and sold at auction in Houston in Aug 2013 (see attached PDF). It has been repaired and the eBay listing describes the title as "Rebuilt, Rebuildable & Reconstructed". I've attached some before and after pics. Thanks again!

FWIW, I've been chasing info on that car trying to get a report on the repair done calling local body shops but not having any luck yet. I've been in contact w/the dealer for several days now, prior to it being put up on eBay. It's been hit and has got a salvage title. The Carfax indicates the hood and both front fenders were replaced although the fenders look fine in the salvage site photo posted above. There was no mention of the rear impact which it apparently had with the lack of rear bumper.

Probably the most noteworthy 40AE owner on the Soloporsche board (Spain) recently contacted me with his car's number, and also gave me 5 different entries from the listing of cars without numbers that all were his car! That really helped. Again - thanks 6ta1, and everyone else please don't hesitate to post or PM me with info on cars that aren't on the registry. I really appreciate all the help.
651 is sold and should be in the garage in 10-15 days! :-D

Congrats and welcome to 40AE ownership! Post some pics when she arrives! It's nice to see another 40AE in the Midwest.

Great to have you here! Post a pic of your car or our 40AE bretheren won't believe that you have one . You may want to brag a bit about your car being in the Total 911 article, too.

Hope ive done that right, and the car will be used in a photo shoot and article for Total 911 magazine. The feature is about the new 991 50th but will also include my 40th and another 911uk.com members 964 30th.

My car is number 49 and ive owned it for three years, despite having an expensive major engine rebuild in my first year of ownership i still love it.

No scored bores on three cylinders.
Damage was done prior to my ownership and is quite comman on the 996.

We have a company in the UK called Hartech who specialise in rebuilding these engines and modify them to avoid similar problems in the future.
Their website is a great read for owners of 996's and contains advice on the common problems and how best to reduce the risk of them happening.

What causes that to happen? And how did you know it did happen?

Quite complicated to explain why it happens, but put simply its a cooling problem that causes the oil to thin on the thrust side of the piston which then makes contact with the cylinder.
Normally this causes the engine to use more and more oil.
Mine was discovered during a service with the aid of a borescope. In the UK this is a well known problem with both the 996 and 997 engines.
A full explaination is available from Hartech (www.hartech.org)

Hello
just got back from a Mpls/Charleston SC road trip in the 911. Worst blizzard I've driven, in many years, in southern Ill. Car went thru no effort with blizzacks. #1374 now has 160,000 miles and running perfect. It sure sad to hear all the 996 horror stories, I must be a lucky guy.

Ok gents, add me to the list of AE owners. First time 911 owner and can't be happier with my choice.

Started out dead set on picking up an 02-04 996 4S or possibly a Turbo. After looking around a bit I discovered the AE. Long time car guy but new to Porsche so wasn't that familiar with all the variations.

Located in the Northeast so I was focusing on a 200 mile radius. Looked at a few AE's at various dealers and spent some $$ on a PPI that saved my butt. Just like everything else, some dealers are good and some are BAD! Shoot me a PM if you want the specific details but the take away is if you're spending big money (at least to me it was) and buying from a distance, do a PPI!!

Purchased #515 from Porsche of Delaware. A one owner car in superb condition with just over 17K miles. Great experience, they were a class act!

Only problem is my wife cannot remove me from this car....no joke! I will post pictures once I remove myself from the driver seat and wipe the car down.

RL seems like a great place to spend some time, great cars and really helpful and nice people.....happy to be here!

Coming to you from New Rochelle, NY.....home of Rob Petrie and the Dick Van Dyke show!!
