Much as our cars are getting long in the tooth, our cars are still pretty cool and attract attention... I should remember that on the days that I'm annoyed at my car's ailments.

I dropped my kiddo off the other day at school after a track day and had not yet taken off the giant numbers from the car - as he got out I heard this young boy (maybe 5-6) yelling something and pointing at my car...

he repeated it

and again

as I left the drop zone and rolled passed him I finally could make out what he was yelling

RACE CAR

LMAO!!
He kept yelling it as I drove off, ever 5 seconds or so _ I smiled thinking...one of these days boy, it's gonna be you

So we get back in our 968 cab after a quick trip to the QFC and a fellow approaches...
"So how long have they been making this model Porsche. I though I knew my Porsches but I have never seen one of these". " Beautiful car!"

Walking out of a restaurant to the parking lot across the street. My 997.2s cab was parked next to a BWW m4 convertible. These were the only 2 cars left in the parking lot. A group of kids were passing while I headed to my car. One said " hey look at that a BMW and a Porsche parked together." They saw me heading towards the cars and one exclaimed" hey so which one is yours?" I hit the unlock on the fob and the lights went flashing on the Porsche. The whoops and the fist pumps went up to the sound of the Oh Yeahhs!! Kids can be pretty smart.

Pulling out of a local strip mall parking lot in my (very dirty) 93 964.

I see a kid, late teens or so, walking along the sidewalk, so I stop and wave him by. He stops, right next to my car and says "Cool ride! What year?" You already know the response, "Thanks. 1993."

He stands there and says, "awesome!"

This was <1 minute after I had seen a 991 in the same parking lot and chatted with the new owner. Have to say that the 964 looked a bit dowdy compared to the 991.(not that I want to change my Bella Negra Caliente)

as awesome as 991's are they will never be a 964...and visa verse

If I was moving cars a 964 would be 1st choice - unless price was not an object - but the 991 would be WAY WAY WAY down on the list even if price was not an object

Ed, sadly I tend to agree with you. A 991 is not high on my list right now. Porsche needs to put that porker on a diet and make it more user friendly in terms of maintenance.

I have to say that, as I was watching him drive out (and past my car), I thought "that car's a LOT bigger than mine! Wider and longer." Makes the 964 look like an old narrow body...

Two things happened in the last two days for me that are 996 related:

- Just finished removing the track pads from my car and putting my street pads back on. Went to back the car out of the garage so I could wash it and forgot that for about the first 10 seconds or so after pushing back the calipers you essentially have no brakes. Usually this is no problem but the family SUV was parked closely behind and I had only a brief moment to yank on the emergency brake. Heart skipped a beat after that one but at least I realized it before disaster struck!

- I've been hearing a faint clunk when backing out of the garage in the mornings. I've checked the suspension and I've had the car inspected but no luck finding the problem. After I managed to back the car out yesterday I was vacuuming and I found an empty Red Bull can under my driver's seat! You may not think this is a big discovery but I don't drink Red Bull and I don't know anyone who does who has been in my car! Plus I don't leave it with the top down or windows open and it hasn't been valeted for over a year. So who knows how it got there but no more clunk since then!
