Default Official "It Happened to me Today" thread - Porsche Stories - good, bad, funny, sad

OK..

maybe this will inspire some fun - some laughter - and maybe a cringe or two. If you have a funny story, something happened you want to share, something you saw... or were seen doing - lets keep it about experiences with Pcars...
though some OT is always fun too

I will start cuz this is so wierd I wasnt sure even where to post it..

There are two 270 degree looping freeway interchanges I take going home from work. When I am lucky I get a free shot at one, and sometimes both... I have learned how to allow the cars ahead of me to get around if they are far enough ahead, and I know when it just isnt going to happen. (sad - but more than 70% of the time I just say... nope... not today, and let it wait till tomorrow)

the one comes off a street with a 35 mph, loops to the freeway - 60 mph -
I have worked hard to get better, smoother, and mods. This is my test spot cuz I hit it all the time and know it well and I am pretty dialed in on these two spots when they are open AND is safe (relatively, since it is a public place... I do not exceed the limit by more than 10 mph and only for a very short stretch - its a HARD corner...so 60+ is cruising - my rental car got loose at 40... 30 in the rain !!!)

so tonight I am on the 35 zone and its open in front of me... i am getting ready and making sure no one is going to "last second" change lanes and take the entrance when the guy behind me litterally lays on the horn and does not stop - I mean holy jackass!! I am going the speed limit too... a look in the mirror at some punk *** driving a BMW ON MY *** ... Well I was ready to shoot the loop so I fire into it, pour on the fuel and start to pick up speed - a look back and this guy is on me........ more speed and drop into the inside..... a look in the mirror - he is litterally sideways.... smoke coming off all four tires.... I am concentrating cuz I know I am about to push it .... hit my exit point almost full throttle into the straight - look in the mirror and this guy is spinning in the opposite dirrection then he was sliding a second earlier -

what a dumb *** - wreckless - scary dangerous pile of crap this guy is as I roll onto the freway at exactly 60mph (down from 68 on corner exit... not my fastest - but I have not been in the car for about a month and I was distracted)

I am thinking this guy nearly wipes out his car and lord knows who else was behind him and had to stop to avoid him -----

anyhow he gets his car straight again and comes flying down the freeway (I am expecting some sort of altercation) and drives by me at about 100 in the car pool lane (alone) .........traffic slowed me up... never saw him again

I am not sure how this makes me feel... a little bad for my "fun" and realize I have to play it very safe, a little scared for people driving with no sense.... and a little happy he didnt try and cause trouble -

would have loved a video of him spinning behind me though tons of tire smoke - dumb ***!

sorry for the long read - I was trying to be "engaging" - I would love to hear other stories... hopefully not all of them include dumb acts like mine -

heh.

I have an offramp which empties into a two lane with a hard median which, if the lights are just right, lets me punch it on a sweeping right hander before I slow down into a regular two lane road. One time, everything was perfect, letting me do a 9/10ths slide before slowing down for the rest of the ride home. Then, blue lights.

After the usual license, registration, he asks, do you know why I stopped you? I said, I guess you saw me go around the corner. He said, yep, I saw you go around the corner. "Next time, make sure there isn't a cruiser on patrol sitting at the red light with all the other shmucks when you punch it with your $80-100k car." Funny, because the base price of my car was about 80k, and with options it was about 110k. I guess he knew what he was talking about. I said "sorry," he said "no problem." And off I went.

No stories like that to share today....

But, lately I've been taking my 5 and 3 year old boys out for rides in the 996. They love it and ask me to find the curviest road I can find. Then they ask me to "go fast" - and then "stop fast" (brake hard).

Today, we're visiting family in Oregon, and were driving back from the coast to Portland in a Subaru along some curvy roads - my 5 year old says to my wife, who's driving, "I wish we were in the 911; this is too tippy!"

Saturday May 19th, 2007 Biltmore Estate NC. Not today, but funny.

A girlfriend and I went to Biltmore on an "all day date". As we were leaving, I noticed a few Ferrari's starting to gather in the front parking area in front of the house. 360's, F-40, 355's, etc. Then a huge Ferrari tractor-trailer pulled up that read Atlanta Ferrari on the side. I asked around what was going on. I was told they were having a Ferrari gathering and picture opt.

I told my girlfriend, "We gotta leave now! I'll be here all damn day if we don't". She understood why. As we were leaving the parking area, Of course I had to impress the few folks in the area with the 996. As we approached the part where you pass in front of the home, a "security-guard looking guy" stepped out in front stopping me. He got on his radio and was saying something about, "Yes I have him here, do you want me to direct him...blah blah blah..."

I thought I was screwed. He told me to just pull up front with all the rest. Huh?! What?! Over there with all the rest of the Ferrari's. This ain't no Ferrari, it's a Porsche. Huh?! What?! He stepped back and took a look at my 996 and said he can't keep up with all these new sports car's. Sorry.

We laughed...

I once exited a 180 degree highway on-ramp at 40 MPH in my Honda! Not impressed? Then you need to drive my POS Honda.

Similar event in San Diego back in late 80's - my favorite 2-lane connecting ramp after work - I'd done a million times in my little 75' 911 S. Anyway I'm hitailing thru the ramp and a little ricer burner p/u is on my a&&. So I run the car up to my known cornering speed and I look back for a sec in the rear view and he flew up on the angled jersey barriers and then came back downhard and went across both lanes in a screeching ball of smoke - was hilarious.

Today, I woke up... it's raining again.... I drove my Saab to get coffee, looked longingly at Porsche(s) in the garage & driveway...

Sat my butt on the couch and watched "wow wow wubzy" with my daughter and 2 dogs... oh well... maybe tomorrow.

BUT yesterday! I drove my friend to pick up his new Lexus GS(yawn) and the dealer was about 30 minutes away, Drove the 996 and enjoyed scaring my friend silly! He is a rather mellow driver.
We spanked a really sharp 80's 930 on the way there as well.

Ok, well mine happened two days ago. I had a meeting in Downtown Detroit and I live about 20 miles North, so it was an interesting drive down there as the Roads all seemed to be underconstruction. (I am under what is called a restricted license these days as I don't always follow the rules. (I could have told them that, as you will see! lol ) I try never to listen to the radio or the CD player while driving as I prefer the sound of the Motor. Anyways I get on the freeways to drive home and I see a few "open" spots and I decide to take advantage of the open areas and all I can say is..........I now remember what one of the many reasons why I bought my 911 was!!! However, I played nicely and felt that I was being a bit reasonable.......of course this is a relative term......But all I can say is that I will always and I do love the sound of my 911, it not only handled like it should but it sounded like, well it sounded like a beautiful racing machine! Just absolutely wonderful!!!! All I can say is that I had a huge smile on my face by the time I got home and I am very happy that the Local LEO's were at a coffee shop or somewhere else!

This was the first time in about 2 month that I have had the chance to "play" a little and as time goes by I will learn to play a little more reasonable, but once in a while it is fun to play like this, and of course this is why I bought the car!!! I would bet this is why most of us bought the car!

Maybe this group could help me figure out what kind of car pulled up next to me about a month ago.

I was at a stoplight with my son and a smaller car pulled up next to us. We could not see any logos on the car. I believe it was a 4 door, but I would not swear to that. The spoiler was very tall. I looked at pictures of Lancers and Scions and they don't have a spoiler height close to this cars spoiler. The car seemed to have a wedge shape with the hood lower than the trunk. I know this is not much help, I wonder if this was a custom car of some sort.

I had only had the car less than a week. I asked my son if the other guy looked like he wanted to 'play'. My son said "I don't think so". When the light turned green, he stomped on his gas pedal and I followed. My son (20 yrs old) was laughing and screaming in delight. I was about a half car length behind him and I never did catch up. The thing that delighted my son was how much this other car trembled and the engine screamed especially at each shift. My son said it looks like it is going to fall apart! He later said how smooth the Porsche was at shifting and how quiet the Porsche engine sounded.

I did not do much as all this was going on but watch the tach and shift. Although it seemed like we were racing for a minute or more, I would guess it was about 10 seconds. At 83 mph in third gear I realized that I was almost 30 mph over the speed limit and was teaching my son what NOT to do in a car. I whipped off onto a side road while braking and looped back around to the main road. We tried to find the guy, but there was no sign of him. We wanted to ask him about his car.

I got home with three impressions about the incident. His car rattled and had a high pitch whine - kind of like a vacuum cleaner that has sucked up a sock. ( That description would probably irritate the owner of the car :-) Somebody suggested he may have had a supercharger installed.) The Porsche held its own with an inexperienced driver (me) and was much quieter and smoother. Last, even 55 year old Dad's can do really dumb things in a car (but it was fun!)

my day sucked but then got better

part that sucked

i was meant to be going to the NH exotic car show, been looking forward to it for ages, weather was miserable though so the guys i was going with backed out, i ended up not going either

good part

spent most of the day in the garage touching up stone chips and then used scratch-b-gone and got rid of all of the scratches on my stainless door sills, really great stuff, already used it to get rid of all the scratches that my cleaner peppered my wolf range with so it has paid for itself several times over

turned into a pretty good day

hopefully tomorrow i can actually drive it

Probably was supercharged or more likely, turbocharged. The little ricers get some ungodly power out of those little box cars - but I've talked to a guy that did one and he indicated that they don;t hold up very well, but when they run, they fly/. Note also that you would have taken him in a top speed race. They have 'short legs' mostly...
