Shifting away from the 996, I had a pretty unique opportunity to go out to the Bahrain Intl Circuit this week for a Karting event and found out they also had a 4x4 experience here too. At 250lbs… everyone ran away from me on the main straight but I’d catch them in the interior part of the course, out of 19 cars I placed 10th so I guess I’ll call it a moral victory.
I may have caught the Karting bug which would mean I’d probably have to give up another hobby to fund it. There’s a Kart track adjacent to Homestead Motor Speedway, it’s about 10mins from my house and you can rent a small garage for your kart… or maybe some Porsche parts *wink* *wink*.
The 4x4 experience was exceptional and actually very technical. Since I’ll be doing the Mojave in August, why not get some training in a rocky and desert environment? There were several 70° ascent/decent peaks, loose sand, water fording area and different terrain to experiment on. I did well but in reality the Nissan Patrol did all the work, ironically it was a gas powered V8 with a much of off-road doodads vs the older diesel monsters we’re used to seeing on this side of the world.
Going up the 70° was pretty straight froward and pretty cool considering I was damn near looking into heaven but when we got to the peak and the instructor told me to get off the gas and not use the brake… that’s when I had to let the decent control do it’s thing. It’s pretty unnerving looking straight down at the trail and not ahead. Overall it was definitely worth it, there’s a McLaren experience there but not sure if it’s a seasonal thing since I haven’t seen any sessions open. Took a small self guided tour and I was the only person at the circuit at the time of the photos, enjoyed the quietness but would’ve loved to experience the scream of F1 cars.

That is amazing! I know a couple VW/Porsche guys who’ve done Moab in their Touaregs/Cayennes but I’d like to do something less technical and more like off grid camping.

Before that road trip, my wife (GF at the time) was pissed about the time and money I spent installing the winch and bumper. After that self recovery, I earned a some leeway in regards to vehicle projects. Now all those chips are getting cashed in with the current Porsche work.
