More than pandemic and chip shortages Tesla has changed the car market. The Model Y is expected to be best selling car in Europe in a few years, not best selling electric, not best selling car in it's class, best selling car. Car companies are crapping their shorts, copying Tesla interiors, retooling, pledging to be mostly electric by 20??. That's disruption.
I think it is important to distinguish the European automobile market from the US market, and other countries as well which are characterized by open spaces and longer daily drives. Those markets will be slow to change over to electric cars and will provide a large market for petroleum based fuels well into the future, certainly within our life spans who post on this board. Also, related to this, the electric power industry will eventually need to add capacity to support a burgeoning electric car population, and that industry is notorious for long licensing and build out periods.Also this new capacity will itself depend largely on fossil fuels to produce electric power. Wide spread electric car population will also obviously need build up of the related support structure. I agree Tesla appears to be disruptive but at least in the US the actual effects of disruptive technologies are sometimes magnified or dampened by the political nature of needed investments.
