Shopping list:

-Suitcase of Bud Lites in anticipation of victory
-Left hand drill bits (2 sets in case I dull out the bit I need, they're 9 bucks.
-Transfer punches, looking for an excuse to buy these. If you don't know, transfer punches are punches that come in many different shank sizes. The idea is you find the shank size that best fits the hole you need to punch the center of and it locates for you.

-Drill bit guide... Ummm, can't buy that and don't have a lathe, or skills... So - after Aaron (both of them actually) described to me what they were, I made the below. The purpose is to ensure the bit drives straight and minimize the risk of it wandering into...aluminum in my case.

Aaron told me what to be careful for and pay attention to while drilling into the bolt stub and I slowly proceeded. Small bit, maybe an 1/8 in down. Went to next size bit and it made it maybe another 1/8 in before grabbing the bolt stub and walking it out.

Thanks to the guys here and all my buddies for the support and guidance. The threads seem to be OK and I was able to thread another bolt down by hand, so no idea why the first one snapped still. I'm going to bring my torque wrench to work tomorrow where I can check it on a calibration tester and make sure there's nothing wonky with it. Hopefully I can get 1 replacement bolt real quick like and get back on track.

Congrats on the successful extraction! I know those types of bolts can be a challenge. Also, I like your taste in shoes.

I know... I'm so lucky I have an expensive ARP break on the 18th of 20 total I need to torque and have no idea why - instead of a lottery ticket, I'm buying more bud lites to forget about that kind of luck.

Congrats on the successful extraction.
Saved a head gasket and some time, and a LOT of possible frustration.

It's not bottoming out by any chance? Congrats on the extraction. Looks clean. I love the makeshift drill guide -- brilliant.

Nope - that was the factor that led me to go with the ARP bolts in the first place, the factory bolts are TTY and for the little bit of extra money the ARP cost, I liked that they could be reused.

Thanks man - that was the 2nd revision and way better than the 1st one. Ah haaa moment on the way back from harbor freight this morning. All the bolts were / are same length and the other 18 got to the prescribed 80FT/LBS so I don't think this one bottomed out.

Zing !
I also thought bottoming out may have been the reason.
I would maybe check the depth of the hole in the block to just make sure it's the same as the others. You may have already done this.

Talked with ARP this morning and they were awesome. I should have a new bolt tomorrow and will be sending the failed bolt in for eval. So, credit to them for handling it exactly as I would hope.

Yeah man - I'm one of them, will definitely be following up with them. They said on the phone it sounded as though the washer spun, or gave on the head causing the torque reading to be momentarily thrown off. I will take extra care on the next go to make sure the surface where the washer sits and the washer itself are free of any substance, I did that the first time but will make it a point of emphasis.

Also, brought this torque analyzer from work - should allow me to make sure the torque wrench is doing what its supposed to, at least to 50 FT/LBS. It's in calibration so it's word is the word. I talked to my calibration house and they said they could cal the wrench in a day if it's wonky.

Heads are on

Intake just mocked up for the inspiration. Glad the head bolt debacle behind me - on to the next.
