Repairing the “black foam coming out of vent” issue

I’m loving my car more and more, 5he longer I have it (2years now), and the more thinks I fix, the better it is. I’m al ost done, need to put in brighter console/instrument led lights, and maybe in the spring, upgrade the shocks, and I’m pretty much done. Just go and enjoy it and the maverick Porsche car club.

I did my flaps last evening using the video technique. Not a bad job at all. I found out why my heat/cooling was still working despite all the foam coming out the vents. All the pics and descriptions I’ve read show the foam off, leaving a bare metal flap, but on my ’03 there was a “skin” left behind, almost like plastic wrap, only sticky on the metal side. I had to peel all this remaining material off before putting my tape on. This was the worst part of the job. I used a wide, foam/foil backed tape, that covered in one piece and it slid in easy. Trying to clean up the residual foam was a PIA and I’m sure I’ll still get some out vents before it’s all done.

Since I’m a new e to Porsche, and mine is an ‘03 Carrera cabriolet , I’ve only been working repairing items that I’ve found needing work on my 996. I would contact a local Indy, and ask about different models as I’m not versed in how other models are built. Mine is vastly better now and I’ve only done the two flaps , one from the inside pax side, and the other from under the funk lid, under the middle of the wind shield. I understand there’s also one a bit behind the center infotainment ( center upright) area, I need to take out, not much problem, and it’s straigh5 back behind there, w/ 2 panels that have holes in them, that will need to be redone. That’s the best I have on all this right now. Dave

Foam repair
I went to lowes and got some foam with one side sticky that you peal the tape off of, and about a 1/4” thick by about 1 1/2to 1 3/4” wide and taped both sides and I’ll see if i can post some photos here
This is the diverter cleaned up ready for new foam tape
Done
Overlapped about a quarter inch and pressed both sticky sides together to help it not come apart
The hole in middle is where diverter goes
It’s a bit fiddley, but if you go slow you’ll get it done. I foune a thread on rennlist as to how to take it all apart and reassemble with pictures

Can you post the thread please. Ive been looking for it. I think I would rather do it this way. Seams like the access is good enough.
Thanks

I also used foam insulation tape and took it a step further and wrapped it in aluminum foil tape.

Foam tape
I went over to Lowes and couldn’t find the exact tape i used and other plumbing and electrical stores were closing so nutz. I need more myself as i still need to take out my center infotainment area and do the baffel back ghere. I see lots of closed cell tapes, one sticky side on Amazon, so I’ll be looking for either 1/8” or 3/32” thick and somewhere in the 1 1/4” to 1 1/2” wide closed cell , one sticky side and just get it on Amazon. Pretty soon.

question
Great presentation, since I have fat fingers and half blind for close up work, does anyone have a recomendation of a shop in So.Cal (Orange County) that would be recommended for the repair? 2005 - 997.1.
Cost is not really an issue within reason :-)
