Top Speed (track or other)

Around 165mph
On an empty German Autobahn without a speed limit
Doubt if I will ever do that again on a public road. It is way too fast. If anything unexpected happens on the road outside your view it is almost too late to react.
At the local track max 130mph, the straight is too short

I posted a comparison review in my original 991 thread here. I can't search well from my phone to find it, though.

125 mph (kinda wimpy, I admit - but opportunities for even that are rare).
I agree that:
I agree that:
- 996 really seems to like speeds above, say, 95 mph
- It likes the twisty roads (where 70 is about the upper limit of safe) even more

-I honestly think the 991 feels even bigger than it is. That's not to say it feels like a big car, but comparing dimensions of the 996 to the 991 (which are significant but not astronomical), the 991 feels like it's bigger still.
-Power is immediate and endless. Even on the front straight at Barber, I didn't have the pills to reach v-max: I think I made it up to 165mph-ish in the Turbo S, but would have to double check the vids to be sure. It's intoxicating for sure, but there is something to be said for wringing out the 3.6 in the 996 in order to be fast. There's no doubt I would get WAY more tix in a 991 if i had one in my garage.
-The PDK is hands down better than the manual (I cringe as i type that while wearing my "Save The Manuals" T-shirt), and if it were to see 50/50 street/track time, there's no doubt I'd buy a PDK. The rev matching on the manuals is fun, but it's so easy to do the same w/o that feature on the 996, it's just neat to experience the first time and nothing more.
-Where I'm able to reach the limits of tires/suspension in a C2 996 when a steal it away from my buddy that likes owning cars more than driving them (honestly have not done so yet in my C4S), I never felt like I was reaching the limits of the 991, even when we experienced rain on the track. Perhaps the thought of putting a $150k car into the wall at speed kept me humble, but even on long sweepers at triple digits did I never lost traction... ok maybe a bit, but was super predictable and communicated in an almost relaxed way.
-I'd be hesitant to compare the two like many might compare the 996 to an air-cooled 911, but the 996 does feel more raw and engaging if for no other reason than it's lack of technology and capabilities comparatively speaking of course. I guess the best way to put it -- the 991 is just more 911 in every metric: size, speed, handling and smiles per miles.

thx for your comparison. i tried looking in the 991 forum to see cuda's write-up but wasn't successful.

When I look back at my 3.2 Carrera from 1988, compared to my 99 996, the 0-60 times are still in the 5-second range. The base 996 really isn’t a fast car by today’s standards.

127 mph in a heartbeat shift 3, 4, 5 up a long sweeping interstate ramp where I could see behind me...not saying where. The 996 may not be the fastest 0-60, but boy does it keep pulling right on up there. Backed off immediately because too afraid of getting pegged by a trooper at that speed. My wife looked at me and I said we just did 127 mph. She was reading her Kindle and didn't even notice. The car was solid and I can see where +100 mph all day would not phase one.

I saw my speedometer read 116, but didn't look back down after that. I had the pedal on the floor on the back straight at mid-ohio. If I had to guess I was hitting 120ish all day long and would have gone faster if I had more nerve going into turn 4. I kept braking early because it was terrifying coming up on a 90 degree corner at those speeds and it was my first time on a track. That's the fastest I've gone in my 996. In my RX-7 I took it up to 134 once and it was still pulling pretty hard.

Topped out a 350Z (at the limiter) at 155. But this was on the Nissan test track in AZ.
Over 100 in my rally Talon (also on snow and ice) at the Sno*Drift stage rally. That gets real exciting with trees lining both sides of the road...
