What did you do to your 996 today?

Lessons Learned:
> Blowout on the freeway even on rear tire has a high probability of loss of control leading to a fatal crash. Car started shifting to the right and left like it wanted to spin.
> If you hear an unusual sound or condition pull over when safe and check it out. When starting the engine it sounded rough like rocks in a cement mixer, when backing out of the driveway the engine carrier lightly touched the ground. I thought it was only a blown strut so continued on until vehicle started shifting around becoming uncontrollable.
> Be aware of age of tire. Tires are General G-Max installed 4 years ago and now with 30,000 miles on them. Seems like when purchasing tires they are a year old, so maybe these made five years ago.
> Our 2002 996 does not have tire pressure monitoring system. There was no instrument indication tire had failed.
> Great German engineering provided all equipment to easily change flat tire and get back on the road. Good practice after oil change finished to check spare tire pressure, and jack and handle, lug nut wrench, and lug locking key are present.

The above is very good advice. I decided to use the spare (instead of a winter wheel that would have been handier) to make sure all was present in the toolkit, which it was, but the spare was at 4 PSI !!! Many others have reported the same experience with the spare having virtually no pressure (should be 60 PSI IIRC). If you haven't filled the spare to rated pressue in a long time, it's probably at unusable levels.

Good reminder. I'll check mine as well.
On another note, how long does a spare tire last age wise? Mine would be ~20 years old now. Even at proper tire pressure would it be safe to drive on?

they are definitely not safe to be driving around on. should only be used to get directly to a shop. I would not use mine personally. I keep a tire plugging kit and an air compressor in the frunk. If the hole can't be patched, I call AAA.

Yeah, I've wondered at this point if it's even worth keeping in the car. Same with a tool kit. I usually pack a pretty extensive one when I go on road trips and then I think to myself "what am I actually going to fix on the side of the road?"

The stock temporary spare is 105 95 17 which is 4.1" wide and 24.8" tall. Tirerack.com doesn't have that size but has 115 95 17, that's 4.5" wide and 25.55" tall. I wonder if any clearance problems fitting in the frunk?
When I replace the rear tires I'd like to go with 285 35 18 at 25.84" tall, so I may get the new temporary spare from Tirerack to match the height of the new rears and not have the differential spinning faster on one side compared to the other.

Good idea on checking the spare tire air pressure. I thought the correct way to use the spare is to swap the front tire to the rear and then mount the spare on the front. Never had to do this but it makes sense.

I had a tiny window this weekend to sneak into the Garage... heres a teaser
Will be posting in a "Recaro Seats" thread soon once I have it completed.
Looking like my goal of a theoretical curb weight of 2750 will be in my sights soon.

My car is a 2002, equipped with a non-MOST bose system. My only complaint is the volume adjustment increments using carplay are significant jumps. The volume settings for all other music inputs are adjustable so I lowered them accordingly. It's not terrible. Using carplay, when the sound level is at 5, it's more like 10 on any other radio. I believe the volume increments goes from 0-30. If you're on the fence, I would do it. The user selected equalizer settings really improves the factory bose system.

I just finished pulling the front and rear seats . My sea of grey interior needs some contrast . My gray seats will become black leather with gray/black/red/white plaid cloth centers . Will also ask for red stitching to match the shifter boot I already installed .
I was real happy that all electrical connectors were removed without breaking anything . Both front seats are 8 way so enough connectors to make me nervous . I took pics so should go back together with no problems . I am delivering to the upholstery shop tomorrow morning .

Had some work done on the nose.
I'll try to add the information to the other aero kit part thread, but for anyone interested, this is the OEM part # 996-505-980-03-G2X I ordered from Porsche Delaware. The price was $2088.71. It's important to note this part number is listed in the PET as fitting the 996.1 GT3 up to -02 and it comes with the center radiator cut out. This was a surprise to me, but I'm okay with it as I have a center radiator I can put in. It is listed for the Boxster on their site and says it does not fit the 1999 911. https://www.delawareporscheparts.com...99650598003g2x. You may notice this is the same part number that people that have bought from Rose Passion have received, but as far as I know, those have all had the center radiator filled like on my factory aero kit cars. There is one other part number that could be replacement for the Carrera aero kit with the filled center but it's twice as much. https://www.delawareporscheparts.com...
