@Manny_911 What's that part number and how much was it? Looking at mine tonight, it looked very faded...

looks like Ebay has aftermarket covers for $14. Amazon $17 also aftermarket just click on the link peterp gave
Pelican parts sells the whole mirror and cover for about $150
and cheap black shift boot as I try to replace all the light wood in the car.
Going to order a base black center console kit from suncoast soon to complete this.
big unknown though is the shiftknob. I'm going to check it today but I'm not sure what "style" I need to be looking for regarding a replacement.
I know its not a threaded one, so I should look for something with a set screw?
I'm having trouble finding specific information and I'm not looking to spend $200 on a basic aluminum shift **** because the application says "Porsche"
Stopped by the local porsche dealership today to pick up a 996.1 oil dipstick to use with my news UAOS so I can run an extra quart of oil in my 3.6. I know, not very exciting.
But I did see a very cool 918. Still very few new or used cars available for sale. Sounds just like the housing market.
just did stainless brake lines, fluid, rear wing bellow, under tray, adjustment of the shift cables. After all that I took it on another rally. Still have to do the rennline throttle pedal hinge.
No offense taken actually I changed out my front bumper that you see in the pics I put back the original aero on
the skirts and the rear are scheduled to get painted again because glacier white is very” blue“ on the body and the age difference makes another issue
I have never seen body shop guy swear or sweat as much as when I walk in his door lol he’s done work for me 30 years
he is a Lamborghini owner and does show cars for bmw m club and Ferrari of new Jersey
I look at my car 996 as a driving project my E30 M3 took 15 years to get it to the point of satisfaction
Fair enough, I totally get they're a work in progress. I'd have to get that resprayed too, I have an exceptional eye for color and that would drive me up a wall. I'm interested to see what it looks like after the respray!
Mine looked as faded as yours, However, I tried the Cerakote plastic trim treatment, and it looks as good as your new part (IMHO) I don't know how long it last, but even a new part will eventually fade as well.
Bonus is, I did not have to R+R any parts.
Apologies for no pics at this time.

I did the same. Mine was not quite that gray, but I think it looks great now that I've freshened it up. Like you I don't how long the good looks will last.

Drove it home from Vegas back to So Cal this morning. Longest road trip I’ve taken in the eight months I’ve had this one and it was great. Don’t usually drive the 996 on business trips like this.
While in Vegas, took a couple of long drives up the 215 to Summerlin, and what a great freeway that is. Especially just as the sun sets over the mountains.
A quick **** break out in the desert this. morning, and took the pic below.

Glad to hear you got it taken care of without too much drama and that it didn't require you to come back on a Sunday. (you should have taken a shot next to the world's tallest thermometer )

Thanks man. Yeah, I was relieved that a Porsche shop on the south end of town - right near my hotel - was able to give me the good news that the code was for a bad purge valve (a small and easily accessible item), and he assured me I could drive it back to LA with no concerns.
I have to say that in 30 years of driving to Vegas (gotta be around 100 times), I’ve always avoided the Friday and the Sunday traffic to and from town. Not that I haven’t been stuck in one or two quasi tailgate parties on the 15 when there was a wreck.
Pulled apart way too many things to fix the dreaded old foam flying out of the vent issue.
Sadly, this was the THIRD time I pulled apart way too many things to fix the flying foam thing!
First time, I didn’t put enough new foam on the stupid damper flap so was getting too much heater core warmth leakage on the low temperature setting.
Second time, I put too much foam on the stupid damper flap, created too much seal, creating too much friction / drag inside the mixing box, making the tiny little motor turning the flap work way, way too hard.
Third time, I nailed it! I’m utterly confident I can manage this chore on any 996 with two tries at the MOST from here on in.
Truly, it’s a nasty little job, but a true do it yourselfer. Costs nothing but time, maybe 10 bucks for some new material, thousands of brain cells, a sore back, tired eyes, aching fingers, a couple of bandages, and half a bag of Canadian high test.
