Had to make a 26 miles round trip run for VVT Solenoids for a client’s vehicle.
Had my choice of vehicles to take.
Decided to shuffle cars around and take my 996.
That 26 miles trip through the backroads took two hours.
Have you thought about buying a more powerful engine ?
Do it yourself corner balance setup day: Some months ago I measured the slope of my carport to make a set of leveling ramps. Here the post: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post16892369
I finally got around to making them and testing them out. (please pretend the car on the ramps is an '02 C2 Cab, mine is in the shop)
The worst case corner is the left rear. It needs about 2" to level with the right front. The problem is that the stack height with the scale is too high. So the ramp needs to extend way back and provide a stopping point so you can get out and put the second ramp and scale under the car.
At this point the ramp and scale are put onto their risers, and you can roll up onto the scales
And now the measurements can begin! The first measurements were made before I checked the level of the scales (stupid belief that all my work is perfect and needs no cross checking). The rears were too high.
Then I sat in the car and while the left/right static balance changes from 50.8 to 53%, the corner balance does not. It seems I'm sitting equidistant between the wheels
Then I leveled the scales (doh!) Off by 0.75" lr and 0.25' rr. Remeasure! Oh, and checked tire pressure, all at 40psi now. Within 0.3%. I'd call that 'not-horrible'.
So then for fun I decide to let 10psi out of the lr. The corner balance changes 0.6% due to unloading the lr corner.
Now, take the lf down to 30psi to reset the corner balance, and it works...
Now I'm ready. Just need the car...
data attached.
Oh! And I got this cool car scent from the scale company. "New Engine Scent". Does anyone know what this smells like? Maybe if it was "New M96 Engine Scent"...

Super cool ! I’m jealous, I have really wanted to invest in scales and alignment stuff...then I blow money on parts... and then I blow money having a professional set the car up with the parts I bought !
Its a vicious cycle ! That said, going to have to at some point, now that the suspension has a lot of adjustability, I would like to be able to use it without having to pay someone to check every setup change.
Whats the details on the scales, where’d you get? How much? Do you like them ?

I looked at Intercomp, Longacre, Procomp, and Speeday. There are many models. A lot of the differences seem to be the electronics and the ability to connect to other computers or your phone or store a bunch of data. I don't need any of that. I looked for accuracy differences between the pads between the different companies, but couldn't find any detail. If there were a difference, I'm sure they'd mention it. So I'm guessing all the pads are the same. I went with the Speedway basic set. $900.00. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/1-Wei...se,377644.html. There are 2 screens: corner weights, static balance calculations. The smallest increment on the display is 0.5lbs. They are quite simple to use.
It seems all the error in using them will come from the person using them. How level they are, tire pressures, car loading, how the car is set onto them. I was surprised that 0.75" change in the rear height was 0.6% change. Conventional wisdom says they should be level to 0.125". if 0.75 is 0.6%, 0.125 would be 0.1%. I'm quite sure my driving skill cannot tell the difference in 0.6%. So I'm good with my leveling at less than 0.25".
What I found most interesting in reading is that for a road course car, you should set the static balance first, left side weight / total weight = 50%, before corner balancing. At 220lbs, I'm not sure how I would do that. A bunch of articles talk about moving stuff around in the car to do this. 220 lbs, is a lot of stuff to move. It would be interesting to see if corner balance can be used to compensate for static imbalance. More reading! I'll figure this out if/when I get a coupe for tracking.
Not sure how far down the road I'll go with my own alignment gear. Another down the road decision. We'll see...
I'm having withdrawal without this car. I find myself looking for a roller to fix up... Bloody addictions...

I believe the answer is, Yes, corner balance to negate the static imbalance and as a result you can see cars where the ride height is slightly different at each corner.
Thanks for the info on the scales... I think as far as my needs, the 2 screens on your setup would be sufficient - so thanks for doing the research for me !
If anyone in the northeast wants to go in on a community set of scales... I'd be interested !
Finished up the big rotor kit because the new wheel bearing arrived. The rotors look much better behind the rims, cant wait for martins rear kit to be available. Also flushed the brake system dor this season with Endless and tried out the new magnetic hdpe numbers.
Rims look good with the msi mid length studs, they are factory sport technos with a 50et front (pluss 8mm from the brk) and 63et rear.
Has anyone put any RSS suspension parts on their 996? I love there motor mounts and although I'm not experiencing any issues, my car is a 2001, and appears to have the original lower arms, drop links, tie rods etc and it might be a great weekend project for me. Thanks
