Pete, thanks for the link to the Mobil-1 Racing Catalog ... great info!

In any case that's what I'd use in a tracked 993, though I'd certainly also consider looking into Steve's Motul 300V recommendation for some usages.

Just an FYI for you folks who love charts

Mobil1 5/40 truck/diesel has a zinc level of 1200, and phos at 1100, which sits right below the 15/50 but above the other multigrades. Just thought I'd throw that in for those who mix oils because they want a slightly lower weight than the 15/50 but still want the protection ...FWIW

I still don't understand two things. Why isn't anyone pulling any lab work, and why are people changing so often?

imo, the only reason for excessive changing is not knowing what's going on with the engine/oil combo.

Here's my idea of an ideal additive package.

Just because they sell it at WalMart doesn't make it bad.

Honestly, an extra sprinkle of zink and a bump in visc isn't the whole story.

Those graphs are silly w/o any data showing what's the benefit of extra zink.

You can also use the 0W40 which is what I did.

I've been using M1 5/40TurboDiesel Truck in my A3 2.0, as it can experience premature fuel pump cam follower wear. UOA shows that it has good Zn and P levels when I change at about 11000 km.

I did forget to mention that 15w-40 has an HT/HS of 4.3cP, a bit more than people expect, considering 5w-40 PCMOs are just 3.5cP. I guess this is the kind of info I should be featuring.

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...300_Super.aspx

The 10w-30 Mobil Delvac 1300S has HT/HS of 3.6cP, fwiw. Most people look to a 5w-40 for that number.

Ahhh, real data that says something about how our oil wears. Huge thanks for that ...very good to know!

FWIW, I had started a thread not too long ago about change intervals, and how we seem to do it on "conventional" wisdom. But I wanted to see if anyone had actual oil-test analysis over the miles that would warrant, or at least guide oil change intervals, as my guess is we're babying our oil and simply doing it because it makes us feel good about caring for our precious pcars. Thanks for sharing ...and hoping others may post analysis!

Hmm, low zink, high boron, low wear.

Does the SOS Services report compare against a database of the same cars and mileage, and against your previous readings? That is a feature that I like about Blackstone Labs.

Cheers,

Mike

Nope, but a lil research should yield that info off another Blackstone report. It is useful info.

What I look at that Kendall 20w-50 UOA again, it speak volumes.

Great to see another oil discussion. I vote for AMSOIL 5-40.

Anybody using the Mobil 1 5-50? I just bought two cases for $6.99 per bottle at Napa. I recall that it was approved on the most recent Porsche list of oils for 993s.

I've been using Mobil 1 15W-50 for 13 years now...no problems and all is well. However...I just get the feeling my car is looking for a change...I mean what machine wouldn't after 13 years. So I'll be on the look out for something different. I think someone mentioned virgin olive oil earlier...my car likes the sound of that.

Brad Penn 20w50 racing oil changed HOT every 3000 miles with both filters...After reading Charles Navarro's article on oil I was hooked, ZDDP figures were impressive. The price is right at about $70 for a case.
