And what impact does this have on the performance characteristics of the oil?

I used Redline for one change and drained it out after 2 track days (about 300 miles total) and went back to the Motul 300v.

With the Redline I saw a 10 to 15 degree increase in engine temperature over the Motul, This was on a day where the ambient temperature was about 5 degrees cooler.

I've used Mobil 1 15W-50 forever, but the 5 qt. jugs at Wal-Mart have been unobtanium for a few years now. When I ran out, I ordered some Motul 300v 15W-50. I use it in my bike too and it tends to run a little quieter. But it's only avail. by mail. I can't stand the thought of paying $9 per qt. for Mobil 1 single bottles at AutoZone. It gets super hot here in AZ and not very cold. Can I get away with Rotella 5W-40? I change about every 5-7k miles. My consumption is about one qt. per 1800-2400 miles.

Rick,

JMHO,..but that Motul 300V is THE best engine oil you can buy right now and given your outside air temps, that's what I'd be using for maximum protection and longevity. Everything else fall short, however,......its a racing oil and should never be left in the engine for more than 3K.

If you are going to stick with that maintenance regimen, I'd be using Mobil 1 V-twin oil (its a 20w-50). 5w-40 is too thin for air-cooled engines AZ weather, especially in summer.

Thanks Steve. That V-Twin is crazy expensive and I've only ever seen it in 1 qt. bottles.

Around here, its cheaper than 300V and yes, 1 qt bottles only as it was made for H-D motorcycles.

I've known the brand since they started selling it in bike shops over ten years ago.

Check out their "Vehicle Recommendation" link at the bottom right of the 300V sheet.

Its in French so I take it its right from Motul France which is where they are out of. They have two selections for Porsche; Porsche and Porsche (US). On their Porsche (US) page, our 993s are supposed to take 5W-30 according to them.

Go figure!

Agree with others a 40 weight isn't a good idea in AZ. In addition to what others have mentioned, you could try Brad Penn 20w-50 if you are willing to change a little more frequently. It's pretty popular for the 993. Also likely a mail order for you, but generally much less expensive than the Motul.

Rick, the V-Twin is excellent. An excellent recommendation from smart people like Kevin and Steve W., too.

I use it in my 993TT. Many of the air-cooled Turbo guys are running it with great success. My Blackstone UOA's support my decision as well.

FYI- it is on sale right now at Advanced Auto for $7.99/quart. Till the end of March. Stock-up. Regular price is about $10.99/qt. You may need to go to multiple stores for +10 quarts, since most Harleys don't hold so much juice.

Well, $7.99 is reasonable. I'll check AutoZone out today. There's one next to my gym and gun club. I've heard O'Reilly's will price match too.

Default Mobil 1 V-twin

After reading every post on the Mobil V-twin and the "papers" on oil properties, I've decided to take the plunge and went 100% 20-50w Mobil 1 V-Twin for the summer. I followed all of the post directions and mainly the P-car instructions. Took me about a net of 4 hours between beers and potty breaks, not bad I guess for the first time changing my oil myself.
I have been running M1 0-40W since I purchased the care 3 years ago, and the temp gauge never exceeded the 7:30ish position. Now, immediately following the oil change and running up to temp my reading is at 9:00 position. Granted it's 88 degrees here but even in this heat I rarely every busted the second 8:00 mark. Not sure if this is reflective of weight change or not.
