I feel bad for everyone that lost anything on that ship. I hope given that the crew was rescued their lives get back to normalcy. I’m predicting (speculating, forecasting who cares what you call it) the root cause will be found. It will likely take years to resolve and possibly more than a decade. The sinking will be studied and discussed and lessons learned from the commercial losses implemented for a very long time. The lessons learned regarding the sinking will be incorporated worldwide where needed in the merchant fleet. That and the crew safety are the positives of the event.

For all we know this could’ve been an arson. I highly doubt the cause will be studied and I highly doubt any money will be wasted in an attempt to perform an excavation in order to find out the root cause. At the end of the day it was property damage/loss only. No lives were lost so the Felicity Ace is low on the importance scale.

Looks like she's down for good. Sorry to all those with cars on-board.

That's going to make it really difficult to determine the cause of the fire.

For a $400+ million loss, there definitely would have been a very thorough investigation by many parties and authorities into the cause or causes of the fire, had the ship stayed afloat.
VW is apparently facing a loss of $155 million. Presumably insurers are on the hook for the rest.

The bold-faced portion of your response cements the point I’m making. This isn’t any more important than the dozens of other car carriers that have sunk over the years (…and that didn’t result in a significant loss of life). There won’t be any further investigation into this matter beyond a bunch of supposition. Nobody is paying for excavation to determine why a bunch of cars caught fire.

Sad. I'm not familiar with such things; perhaps someone else is - how much damage would this do to the ecological system there? Lasting impact to flora/fauna or no big deal in the grand scheme?

It sure would be fun to dive there and look at the pile of old lambos and porsches.

It’s hard to say. Those cars joined all of the rest of the cars already resting on the ocean floor.

I tend to think one of the Li-Ion battery cars probably caught fire. Once those get going, they don't extinguish easily.

My pos 2017 VW Jetta died on on board. Yes, there were some normal people everyday cars in there, mostly from military personnel overseas. I took this pic when I dropped it off for shipping in Kaiserslautern. I killed a small deer near Weilerbach only week after I bought it. I guess it was a sign...revenge of the deer?

For those of us whose 992 came over on the FA, wondering if that history will add value to our rides?

Either way, a neat bit of history to keep with the car documentation.

New artificial reef.

Which may actually be a boon to the ecosystem.

I don't know. How much extra would you offer for a used 911after hearing it came over on the FA?

given that all of the vehicle cargo has sunk, under what theory would the value of a replacement vehicle be affected?
