Yes, but in this day and age, what facility isn’t being monitored by video cameras? I think it’s pretty reasonable to assume there is video someplace…even if now at the bottom of the ocean 😱?

I would wager it was monitored by CCTV, but whether or not it was stored in a cloud is a different story. If there was no cloud, I would presume that footage sank with the ship.

Well, that could be the case. But this much I know….getting larges amount of data (ie, 27/7 of video) off a ship in the middle of the ocean would have to go through a satellite link. While not up on the latest satellite data rates, when I did track this technology, I do remember that the cost was prohibitive for even modest amounts of data. So, if I was designing such a system, I would have the video feeds on the ship transferring their data to a series of thumb drives (or something similar), that the captain, or ships XO could have easily removed and taken with them when they left the ship. I believe (?) there was ample time to do that, before they abandoned ship?

Exactly. The satellite system is set up predominately to cover land, not sea. The assets you do have available are a tiny fraction of what you would need to send all that data and doesn't even have global coverage now. The costs would exceed the losses with the current technologies but if that changes uploading surveillance footage will likely become a thing. Right now we do send telemetry, engine data, various logs, etc.

It isn't like everyone in the maritime industry is an idiot and the idea hasn't come up. As I said in the first place the business isn't well understood and a large part of that is an assumption that land based paradigms will work when in reality they won't in many cases.

My company did some work for Intelsat/maritime links….where cable and fiber optics aren’t.

Yep, this is coming to you from a KVH system. We have data but the bandwidth doesn't even support 1 video stream, let alone many. More could be paid and now you've got a couple streams but even that is just theoretical because the satellites are saturated and you can often have trouble just getting email if it has a PDF attached. The chief would know the exact count but there is something like 20 cameras just in the engine room. While I don't know the numbers enough cameras to cover the entire boat would be quite a lot on a car carrier. Multiply that by all the boats you want to have transmitting data and you've got a whole lot of data to feed through a system that is currently already badly overloaded. If it was economically feasible it would absolutely already be happening. It's a big industry and not everyone is an idiot.

A carrier sinking is not as rare an occurrence as you might think. Heck, the last carrier to sink with Porsche cars on it was in 2019.

There are a lot of boats on the water.

That sounds like you've read more of my posts than I've ever cared about yours. So, really, who's ahead here son?
