The only reference point I can give is that as a former BMW guy, I generally would go for Dinan exhausts (I had one on my E36 back in the day and on my F82) since they tended to be similar to stock but slightly louder with a bit better tone. I like the Akra because it's similar in that regard.
Thanks for your perspective. Do you experience any highway drone with the slip-on?

No, no drone. That would be a pretty big nuisance to me.

Ordered the Akra. Just the slip on, not the cats.

Very interested in your thought after you get a little seat time

Yes, fair point. I have zero affiliation with Akra, so this is just my perception. I also drive in Manual and either Sport or SportPlus 100% of the time and almost never use 8th gear (generally keep RPMs > 2k) unless it’s a really long highway drive.

I guess I don't understand where this world is out there where aftermarket exhausts don't create drone?

Are you saying all aftermarket exhausts create drone? That hasn't been my experience, but I think this is very subjective. I expect aftermarket exhausts to be louder than stock exhausts even during steady state cruising, but that doesn't mean it drones. I have never had any aftermarket exhausts that droned. However, my friend's Mustang had an exhaust with a severe drone at about 2300 RPM where when the car reached that RPM, it felt like this loud, unpleasant exhaust sound was resonating in the middle of my skull. That is what I would define as drone.

Other exhausts, like the Remus in my F80 M3 sound somewhat louder than stock and is noticeable in steady state crusing but does not have an unpleasant resonance, though I can see how someone would say it drones if they want the exhaust to sound as quiet as stock.

Even my stock PSE exhaust with M Engineering tune the forces exhaust flaps open fully in Sport mode sounds louder then stock PSE and actually even imparts a bit more of vibration in the car, but, to my ears, that's not droning either.

Some planet you live on where only loud/poor sounding exhausts exist? I tend to associate drone with the louder exhausts that have a profound resonance even at low RPMs. Not all systems have this in my experience. Akrapovic exhausts in general tend to be on the quieter end of the spectrum (a la Supersprint, Remus, Dinan, etc from my BMW days)

I have only bought 2 exhausts and they were from reputable folks (AWE and Soul--admittedly I got Soul's most aggressive exhaust set up), and they both drone at a certain range (1900ish to around 2300, give or take).

Of course, I prefer a more aggressive exhaust set up with no mufflers and valves, so that is certainly going to be a result of my personal choices. I just don't see the point of spending $$ on an exhaust that doesn't significantly change/enhance sound.

Having said that, Akrapovic reportedly drones as well. Bigworm, the forumer who since sold his 992 for an M3 Competition, had the Akrapovic set up and complained that it droned a lot.

My recollection is BIGWORM complained about this in combination with the Soul sport cats, not for the exhaust alone.

^ Yes, he had the cats too. I don't know how much the cats contributed to the problem, being that the Akrapovic does not have a muffler.

I will say that my AWE valveless, muffler-free dreamy set up on my BMW drones somewhat, and I have a stock downpipe.

This thread suggests the cats really contributed to that:

When you combine parts from MFG 1 and MFG 2, and expect to have an optimal result, what you are really doing is gambling with your money that the system you've created will 1- Sound like you want it to and 2- not cause drone/unwanted tones. When SOUL designs parts, we have specific ideas in mind for the application. We also spend a great deal of time consulting with customers before they make a purchase to ensure they willl end up with the experience they are looking for.

It would not be surprising to me, at all, to find out that adding our cats to another exhaust might cause unwanted tones, yet our Performance Exhaust System with those same cats is one of the most popular 992 Carrera and 992 Turbo systems on the market.

Many after market exhausts will not drone but also every one has a different sensitivity to what they hear
