Any update on “crazy crickets” and “angry bird in the engine”?

My 992 does this, far more noticeable accelerating from standstill, but can be heard just sitting in gear with the foot on the brake.
windows down and it’s a full on zoo at the back!

I get they are noisy beasts anyway, but due to the lack of 992 cars around my way it’s pretty hard to compare to another car.

My dealer said they recorded mine and sent it to Porsche who told them it’s normal. They also listened to another 911 on the lot and said that one did it as well.

I’ve also heard it on YouTube reviews. Where the car pulls away and I hear it. So I suspect they all do.

And since many of us members here also hear it. I’ve given up. If it breaks. I’ve got great ammo to push for my 2nd 992 buy back.

Mine also seems to come and go on loudness. Sometimes I don’t hear it at all. Other times it clicks loud enough that passengers have asked me what’s that clicking.

I just live with it. I’m not happy about it. But what can I do…

For what it's worth, all the 718 GT4/Spyder/GTS 4.0Ls have the same noise

Ok, well I’m at a wedding tomorrow (not that you need to know that) but one of the attendees is the senior tech at my local dealer (which is important).

I’ll tap him up after a few beers and see what info I can get out of him.

Thats not the clicking we are discussing. Our clicking is something totally different than that one.

Might not be the same issue causing the ticking, but it does sound similar to examples in this thread.

I appreciate it. And no argument... but I feel they are two completely different sounding clicking noises. Ours is very much like a cricket or spinning wheel clicking noise. The video in your thread sounds like cold engine clicking.

In my original video, you can hear it between 2-4 seconds if you crank it up. Listen for the cricket noises.

It’s very strange, almost a “chirping cricket”. I’m not sure it’s fixable, but knowing the cause would be 95% of the issue solved. If it’s inherently a 992 thing, be it the oil pump, alternator workings, fuel system or some of the valves in the engine… not a problem.

The only turbocharged car I’ve had in recent years was a v8 M5…. Very different sounds, mainly ticking from the cams hitting followers on cold start, so this flat 6 mystifies me on it’s funny noises.

My bet is its an airleak somewhere in the induction system. Why? I’ve only found one reference from another car with the same sound, it was well documented in a YouTube video on a Mercedes and came from a faulty valve in the induction somewhere. Can’t recall the details, I may have posted a link earlier on this thread, but the guy was very familiar with the sound and demonstrated it on/off on the video.

And yes, this is a different sound to the one in post 111 above. Now there’s a lucky number, very famous RAF squadron (today’s useless piece of information…)

Right, even though I feel like absolute rubbish today due to excessive beer consumption at the wedding, I had a good chat with the Porsche tech who was in attendance.

His take on the 992 engine noises, in particular the crickets…. “Those 992 engines make some funny old noises, unlike the Audi sourced units. I know what you are talking about, not had a car in yet where someone has complained about this, but the oil pump and lubrication system for the engine isn’t quiet, especially once they are warmed up and the oil has thinned out a bit”.

Yep, the 992s sound like 911s. Lots of mechanical noises. 👍

Enjoy the mechanical sounds as long as you can. Revel in it.

Pretty soon we will all be forced to drive characterless, silent cars.

Here's a fun antidote, slightly related...
Similar to now, before I bought my TTRS I was trolling through the forums lamenting with those waiting for allocations and watching as others tracked their boats over to delivery ( it's actually funny to see how many similar threads there are even 10 years later ). Came across one posting where some were mentioning a horrible rattle from the engine after 3-4k RPM ramp down. Thankfully, no one was reporting any other side effects of the issue other than the awful rattle when the engine was cold and after warming up the noise was gone. Sure enough, when mine came in, a week or two after I took her home I was hearing the same rattle. Took it into Audi, and they could reproduce, but couldn't really do much to fix it, as they didn't know the root cause. So they just said drive it and avoid the conditions that exasperated it. *shrug* Even meet up with a few other individuals that were experiencing the same rattle, listened to when they could reproduce and confirmed it was the same issue I was hearing in mine.

About 3 or 4 months later, there was a service bulletin for addressing said issue! Turns out, the timing chain tensioner was too loose under certain conditions. This caused the chain to rattle against the tensioner as the engine RPM's dropped. The fix was an ECU update to adjust the oil pressure to the tensioner. Never heard the issue again after.

So, possibly Porsche could consider it nominal, but address it because enough people consider it odd, outstanding or generally unenjoyable enough to bring it up.
