I thought that may mean that too. But I don't think my car has any cluster update. Just got it from major service 2 weeks ago so it would be on the latest if they had one.

I will check the CAN settings again later and then will order the quadlock extension to try cutting the calble

I wouldn't cut any cable on the factory harness as I want to be able to put it back to stock for warranty reasons. I will try the above, if they don't work, I will order a quad-lock extension cable and cut the CAN-L from that one and see
This is very encouraging and good news that Erisin have responded so positively. Thank you for your efforts with this. We may be getting closer to a solution.

Could you share the instructions for the CAN-L cable?

This is what they sent. I'm not going to cut the car's harness. I need to be able to put it back to stock for warranty reasons.

But if the settings don't fix it, I will get a quadlock extension cable and use that to cut the CAN-L.

Thanks for that. My wife's Cayman is out of warranty so that isn't a concern for me. I could cut the cable, stick a bullet connector on each end, but leave the two parts disconnected. Then, to go back to factory all I'd have to do would be to plug the two bullet connectors together and bingo - reconnection of CAN-L. However, your idea of using a quadlock extension is much more elegant, so I think that would be the better route. I shall investigate. Thanks again.

I tried the settings instructions they sent. It didn't work. I ordered a quadlock extension. Should have it next week hopefully. Will send updates once I install it

I just ordered a quadlock extender - even if it doesn't work, having the extra cable length will be useful when removing the unit to fiddle around...

Mine's coming from Europe somewhere via eBay so will be 1-2 weeks

Would you mind sharing the link to your seller, Andy? Thx

Here you go:

Quadlock harness cable wiring extension for retrofits BMW, AUDI, VW, PORSCHE 1:1 | eBay

This looks like it contains all the right connectors for my non-Bose unit e.g. has blanks where the 4 round holes are and a blank block below that

Yep. This is the exact one I ordered. Seems to match what the erisin unit has. I have basic non bose too.

I guess they will be wondering what happened and suddenly they sold out all their cables

If anyone ever wondered what these things look like inside.... I decided to open up my old HU in the limited hope that the RAM chip was removable rather than being embedded on the PCB

If it was removable I could have upgraded my Erisin unit from 4GB to 8GB - but it's not possible.

In any case, here are a few pics for the curious amongst us!

The answer from Erisin is very interesting and fits well with the results of the tests I did a couple of weeks ago and our assumptions that the issue was at the CAN bus level.
From what they are saying, looks like an issue with the implementation of the low-level CAN bus "electrical" protocol. Their solution seems to just disconnect part of the CAN bus because the HU is most likely sending the wrong signals/current values and they interfere with the car's CAN bus functions.
@andy2111 thanks for the pictures. Can you please let me know if the quadlock plug that is hold into the HU aluminum case by two screws has any electronic components on it or just wires that connect to the main board? I cannot see it very well from your pictures. If there is anything more than just wires, can you post a picture? Also interested on a close picture of the main board area where the quadlock plug connects and its circuitry.

@Chuck245 both the quadlock connector and the black connector for the antennas just pull out. They both connect to pins/sockets on the circuit board underneath.

I had to prise both up with a small screwdriver to get them free - and then you just push them back on to refit

Since you have opened your unit, you can probably cut the pin for CAN-L on that one and test if the Erisin's suggestion will fix the brightness issue. This way you don't cut the harness.

@andy2111 If there is no electronic circuitry on the quadlock itself, this means that the CAN bus low-level communication protocol is implemented directly at the main board level. Most likely by the electronic components mounted near the quadlock pins in the main board. Can not see them very well on the pictures.
I was hoping that the CAN bus low-level protocol was actually implemented in the quadlock because this would have allowed to update the HU hardware if Erisin fix it in a future revision.
Cutting out the CAN-L is a "brutal" approach and I'm sure will limit the communication of the HU with some of the car features. Hopefully, will limit access to stuff that the HU doesn't need anyway or is not critical (i.e. HU controls for ventilation, interior lightning, etc...) We will need to check that after disconnecting CAN-L, things like reverse camera, TPMS, etc... still working correctly.
