Consensus on stock exhaust and, who is considering getting an AM system?

^1Gunner, Tomorrow. Won't have the time to collect it till following day. Stay tuned. Now if you don't hear from me it can only mean one of two things. 1) it is that good I can't stop driving it and have wound up on the other side of the country or, 2) it is back in the shop coming back off. It has to be 100% for me. So yep the expectations are high but, I'm also ready for a fall too. It's an each way bet at this stage.

Hello, I am new to the forum. I enjoyed reading the thread. I now have 2k on my 991 TTS and ready for AM exhaust. It's difficult to get a good sense of how the exhaust would sound on the limited youtube videos out there for the handful of products (GMG, EP, Tubi, FS and Cargraphics).
My dealer recommended Tubi and heard the exhaust notes in person on an install that was on a 991TTS. It is a matter of personal taste and preference, but I felt the sound was still lacking and did not match the aggressiveness that the 991 TTS demonstrates in performance and appearance. Based on the youtube videos out there, the AWE-tuning exhaust seem to have a nice NA type sound that was loud enough but not obnoxious. Anyone have any experience with AWE-Tuning 991 TT exhaust or consider installing one? Thanks in advance.

If you were after a complete system you really need to know are the cats HJS Emitec, and, have the cores been pinned in any way shape or form. If someone has modified a HJS cat then for all you know it too may be full of restrictive pins. So you would want the details on that in writing.

Hey Gunner! It's on buddy. In brief I just wanted to say I feel sorry for you now hehe....damn i'm cruel. Totally too good. They did it again. What was I thinking it wasn't going to work out..duh...i think I must have got too caught out in believing the stock was the be all end all for this car. Fool me. Bake me up some humble pie for even thinking that i'd jumped in the wrong end of the pool. You stock guys have no idea what you are missing out on. It's beautiful. No drone, and the sound and spool....i've gotta go.

To briefly answer your questions for now 1Gunner, the system is very quiet on cruising. There is no break in period as per Stefs advice. The annoying continuous mild resonance which you are refering to in the stock system, which as you know is there basically all of the time appears to be completely gone while driving at cruising speeds now with the EP. I recall before when in 4th (sports mode) cruising along between 1800 and 2200 you would always have the constant resonant hum. Now in those exact same situations there is nothing at all...silent...nothing. It is only when you actually re apply throttle to pick up a higher speed that the engine sound kicks in, and on those occasions the engine can be heard from inside louder than before and the low rpm noise is more broadly spread and louder but is not as needling to the ear as it was. I think that is the change in tone in that range but you could still say it is resonant in the same way as the stock during those brief on throttle actions when throttling the engine in a way that is trying to lug the engine. All in all the car is certainly more enjoyable and more sporty though. Throttle response is improved and the engine will growl more when you get up it. There is no resonance on those occasions as was the case with the stock system. Sorry for the late edit but realised I hadn't addressed your immediate questions so hope this goes toward helping to answer your questions for now. I will elaborate more later when i put some more miles on and in differing conditions....on a new thread.

Not much discussion on headers in this thread. Have people decided that headers are not worth the investment given the cost-benefit? I always thought headers were important to upgrade because of the inherent cost-compromises in an OEM setup. Is that not the case for the 991 TT and TTS?

Guys - how long did it take to install your exhaust systems? I got a quote of $1,200 from a local dealer. That seems like more than ten hours. I know that the rear bumper has to come off, but how hard can that be?

Removing the 4 02 sensors in the cats is also quite tricky and time consuming. The correct way is to firstly unplug them all from the wiring harness in the upper engine bay, carefully releasing the wires from the retainer clips on the inside body of the engine compartment then lastly unscrewing the 4 sensors out of the cats, and preferably once the system is off the car. Many installers aren't prepared to do the job properly due to the time involved and just unscrew the 02's from the cats only and twist the wires up into a very nasty knotted bind which is a potential for irreparable damage or failure at a later stage. The sensors are very expensive and need to be handled with care!
If you have the correct tools which allow the removal of the 10 and 2 nuts without having to remove the inter-coolers (this is a real time saver), and are familiar with the process of removing the 02 sensors correctly then by rights 4 to 5 hours should see the job done IF the system is a precision fit.
It can also come down to the brand of system you plan on installing as most are not the precision fit as claimed therefore will require certain corrections which can take time. I personally would recommend you have your Porsche dealer fit the system rather than some auto shop with zero experience working on a 991tt.

Agree the bumper and rear lights are the easy part. The hardest part of this particular r and r is accessing the 10 and 2 o'clock nuts (out of the 4 that hold each cat onto the back of the turbos without having to remove the IC's. P.S. Here's an illustration from the 996TT. 4 studs secure the cat to the turbocharger with 4 nuts and washers : No 7 and No 8 in the picture.

Now If you are fitting an EP well that one is a precision fit for certain and also comes supplied with the special wrenches to allow access to those difficult nuts, so that will shorten the install time for sure. I still think 1200 is way too much in your money and at most half may be acceptable if not still up there by a hundred or so. But on the up side, even if you do end up paying half of what the existing high quote is at least you have an official dealer involved and that counts for something on a car like this. Having them actually see and fit this system will also reassure them as the dealer with regard to the factory warranty. I am quite sure they will be very impressed with both the system and the end result.
