I found that video of the ZR1 doing a 1:55.9 at VIR. Yeah, his video description says it's October 2018 and he's on scrub slicks, but I've been on track with him before and he's been very fast. To further my point, sadly only a month later he crashed that ZR1 at Summit Point and now drives a C7 Grand Sport very quickly instead.

Onfire, You raise important considerations of course, personally I do not care much about 2WD vs 4WD, I am used to both and you can fine tune your driving and setup to be at par with 4WD.

But a track purpose car such as the GT2RS has so much potential to be modified further, and make another 4-5 secs per 2 minute lap.

On the other hand the 992TT /
should quickly beat a 991GT2RS once good tuning and suspension work is done on it without going all out race setup, and being daily driven.

I have to agree with this. The 992TT (991.3) already starts off with more torque than the GT2RS, which tells you the potential from there will be stellar. I can easily see adding a used 992TTS in a few years to take the pressure off the GT2RS for track work.

Autobild test 992 Turbo

Impressive acceleration from the 992 Turbo S:
0-100 kph 2.5s fastest car ever tested by Autobild.
0-200 kph 8.5s same as 991GT2RS.
0-300kph in 26s is 3 secs slower than GT2RS, but 3 seconds faster than the 991.2 turbo S.

But what they don't tell you is that Porsche seems to have made smart usage of gearing in 0-200kph for bragging rights, 2nd gear takes you almost exactly to 100kph (~120kph on the 991) and 4th gear to 200kph (~230kph on the 991), which will improve times from 0-200kph. Then at higher speeds it suffers because of a taller 5th gear and loses ground vs the GT2RS.
The 7200RPM limiter is surprisingly 300RPM less than the Carrera's same engine, with tuning and a 7500RPM limiter it will change things a lot. Also seems to suffer from some lag, mix of low compression of 8.7 with larger turbos that variable cams don't seem to offset enough.

The new PDK E-ready is heavier by around 50lbs but is rated at 1000NM so the tuning potential of this car is huge, the GT2RS torque was limited to safeguard the PDK.

In the video 2 seconds faster than a 991.2 turbo on the track is quite impressive also.

That really sucks. He was lucky that he side scraped the wall first, otherwise the impact would have been really damaging. I hate to run when it's that cold. Conditions looked pretty dangerous. This is the one thing we need to acknowledge, these cars are getting really fast (race car fast) but are much heavier and do not have all of the safety requirements those cars do. So being cautions and build up speed overtime it's always wise. Gladly everyone was safe!

BTW what software was he running. Pretty impressive graphs

That's the Corvette integrated system. Yes, it's pretty awesome. Not sure why Porsche can't pull this off.

My 991TT is done for the circuit, not pushing it any further, now eyeing the 992TT and go full mods, or a GT2RS to be modified. I expect the 992TT to be 2 seconds faster than the 991.1TT on a 1 minute Hockenheim type of circuit.
Hopefully covid will allow us to hit a few tracks this fall and then focus in Florida this winter. As we finish this build i already started thinking what would be next (i can't help myself ha!). GT3 its limited by naturally aspirated engine and cost prohibited to get more HP, the 992 looks pretty enticing but i'm concerned with the weight. The 991 was already pretty heavy. And while they perform well, the parts do take a beating on track managing this much weight. The wear and tear on tires, bushings, shocks, fuel etc. go up substantially. That lead me to think the 2RS would be the best platform to start from. Specially if you can take advantage of someone needing to unload one at the moment. Already has massive HP, and would be pretty easy to extract a little more out of it, several hundred pound weight advantage, suspension geometry is far superior than our cars, all you would need are better shocks, switch to steel rotors or upgrade to PFC's cup breaks, put on some slicks, work on the cooling side of things and work on added aero and you would have a monster time attack car that you can drive on the street.

With that said, one of the things i really enjoy about my car is how easy its to drive at the limit. Have not driven a 2RS, but have driven both a 991.2 GT3 RS and 991.2 GT3 Cup, and in both instances found it easier to make a mistake. This is mostly due to the 4WD vs 2WD but also found a good difference under breaking but i'm attributing this to setup rather than the car itself.

Then the question is, do you want to modify a $350k car this much? it would be fun though.

Yeah, it seems like they went with the first 4 gears optimized for acceleration, then 5-6 for top speed and 7-8 for fuel economy, while GT2 RS uses 6 gears optimized for acceleration and 7th for top speed - so even with fewer total gears GT2RS has better gearing for acceleration.

I'm surprised to hear about the lag - 991.2 Turbo minimized it already with clever trickery and I hoped they would continue making progress there. Lower compression usually helps reduce lag because there is more energy left in the exhaust gasses due to shorter expansion cycle (hence higher compression engines being more efficient because they are able to capture more energy from the fuel into engine work).

Update: My friend took the advice, bled them down to low 30's hot and his grip issues disappeared! Thanks again.

I don't have any issues with grip unless I am driving like a crazy green student. It's certainly tire pressure and driving technique - patience. When the car is straight, it bites like crazy. When exiting a turn, he needs to add throttle gradually until straight. Also possible he's entering turns to fast - slow in, fast out. If he needs more downforce, he needs to remove the grills under the fender vents, and change to the highest setting on the rear wing. Finally, maybe he needs to get the camber increased (more negative...you know what I mean). I just turned a whole mess of 1:56/1:57's at VIR this past week on sketchy Cup2R tires...I've never seen any street car do that, even on slicks. It's not a problem with the car, but maybe tire pressure, camber, and technique. He should really seek some coaching if these issues don't fix this experience. This is not meant to be critical, only constructive.

You're right and it looks like it was perceived lag by the test driver, he must have confused lag with gear ratios, to find out turbo behavior and lag, one needs to look at in-gear acceleration in higher gears:

80-120kph (~50-75mph) in 5th gear:
991 Turbo S: 3.7 sec
992 Turbo S : 3.6 sec (no additional lag here clearly)

Whats funny are the numbers below:

80-120kph in 6th gear:
991.2 Turbo S: 4.9s
992 Turbo S: 5.8 s (huge difference, because of gear ratios)

Agreed, 8 forward gears in the 992 vs 7 gears for the 991. Overall it's pretty clear the 992 (991.3) is going to be a screamer with plenty of extra room. If it can fit the Cup2R tires, then it's going to be quite formidable. Effective immediately, I will begin really talking down this platform in order to hurt the eventual resale market until I find the perfect used track car. Also, I encourage everyone to order their 991.3 TTS WITHOUT a sunroof but with the sport bucket seat package and lightweight package, so I have more choices!
