Depreciation only matters if you are planning to turn the car over relatively quickly. If you're planning to keep it, it's largely irrelevant. In 10 years, no one will care that a decade earlier Porsche had a problem with a rod bolt fastener that got replaced, any more than they care that crappy timing chain tensioners caused engines to trash themselves on the early 911's.

I think it's denial or wishful thinking of current 2014 owners to think they will have the same depreciation curve as the upcoming 2015 cars. Anyone in their right mind looking for a used 2014 or 2015 will prefer the later model unless there is a significant enticement to go for the 2014, and that would be a big discount vs the 2015.

My opinion only, but I'm not convinced that Porsche is going to offer much compensation , if anything, to current owners. I doubt they have a legal obligation to do so, it will be purely a marketing decision. No compensation will be offered or discussed until there is closure, that being your car is fixed, has the new motor, and then calculations can be made. Here's where I think it's dicey for current owners....if you don't like the comp package (if there is one), well, it's likely your window to return the car for what you paid has closed, it'll be too late. Today the window is open, but 2-3 months from now (which again, is my realistic opinion of how long it will take) I doubt dealers will be inclined to offer a refund.

The above, with the likelihood that 2014 cars will first see the road as the 2015's roll out, means there is no reason to own a 2014 now. A prompt return for a refund seems the most sensible way to proceed.

I know this post will be dismissed or ridiculed by the die hards or true believers, but I don't see how any sensible person would enter into a agreement with Porsche under these circumstances. You can always get another car next year, or drive a substitute for a summer. We didn't have this car before now, and we can certainly live without it for a period. There is just too much uncertainty and risk to continue.

Just my thoughts.

Immediate 33% depreciation? Help me with your rationale.

Porsche replaces the existing engine with I assume a well tested bullet proof new one. The same engine that will be going into the 2015 model. Other than the engine replacement cars are identical.

So why should there be a 33% depreciation on the 2014? Let's assume Porsche opts to extend warranty on the 2014 cars. Which car would you want. A 2014 with extended warranty or a 2015 with a normal warranty?

As is expected by others, there is no doubt in my mind that Porsche will provide an extended warranty on affected cars. That is a huge benefit if selling 3-4 years down the road, when the warranty on a 6-month-newer but otherwise comparable 2015 is about to expire...

Thx A432 for that prompt diagram .. looks like redesign of connecting rod may be required. Agree, or is fitting for screws separately modifiable?

There are more reasons than the IMS why 996's are not as desirable and have not held their value as well as other models. And the relative value of the car when new is also a factor. 996's were overpriced for what they were; I know I owned one.

But that aside my point is still valid. The effects of depreciation are only realized once you sell the car. If you intend to drive it for a very long time, it's largely irrelevant, unless you're using the car for collateral. No one who still owns and drives a drives a 996 they bought new has actually suffered a nickels worth of depreciation yet.

My point is, there won't be enough 2015s available.

Which will keep the 2014 price from falling as most buyers won't be afraid of a cpoed gt3 with plenty of warranty.

You, are not that buyer...

I am very sensitive to depreciation issues. I turn my cars over within 18-24 months if not sooner. I have analyzed this GT3 problem from every angle and what I have concluded is depreciation will be minimal if any. It will be the same as if there was no engine replacement. Why?

This car is very unique made for a specific customer. Porsche will not be building many of them. The value to performance equation is decidedly in its favor. There is no other car on the market that comes close for those of us wanting a track ready car which is useable for DD.

There will not be any problem selling this car at a reasonable and fair price.
