Back in 1963 a guy named Hans Mezger designed a motor for Porsche's new sports car. It displaced 2.0 liters, but he was told to leave "a little margin" for increasing displacement for future upgrade potential. Of course an old school German engineer's idea of a "little" margin is perhaps more than most, and the motor grew slightly over time:

1964: 2.0L
1970: 2.2L
1972: 2.4L
1973: 2.7L
1975: 3.0L Turbo
1978: 3.3L Turbo
1989: 3.6L
1992: 3.8L
2011: 4.0L

This doesn't mean engine size will continue to increase in the future, but it does I think say something about Porsche's design philosophy.

Could it perhaps be, say, a new GT2? For some reason the side vents on the RS don't Jive with me unless Porsche is truly going forced induction for so much "Reliable Power". I just cannot see Porsche up the power on an NA engine without invcreasin displacsment at the same time. And even at that what are we looking at 4.0 - 4.2(maybe), and that is a huge maybe. I just can't see it in their design philosophy, just to continously increase displacement.
every previous RS (with the exception of the 4.0) has been the same displacement as the associated GT3 model and with the exception of the 7.2
usually the same bhp ... I dont see why Porsche would change this for such
a limited production run, although if the MSRP rumors are correct they may have done so to motivate a 50k+ premium

Larry: My info ( several sources I trust) suggest 4.0 though only a modest uplift in HP. Evidently the current GT3 debacle could change a variety of things on the RS, but it is definitely a higher output version of the GT3 engine.
I do not think they will want to launch without a very good story given the brand damage from the recall. Hoping that the current backlog will not push the RS back too far, ( would love June 2015) but no idea yet.

heard the same thing. sept (frankfurt) debut, Q1 2015 first deliveries, caveate being current debacle does not get worse. RS expected to be killer.

current gt3s will be repaired in order of initial delivery, with no special treatment, 918 buyers, or otherwise. if car has not left assembly line, it will be a MY2015.

suppposedly, previously confirmed MY2015 allocations not yet gone to a build phase will not be delayed as should retain their speculated build time.

take it for for it is. understand much of this has been addressed in other posts.

There is no Frankfurt Motor Show in 2014...

The pictures clearly show the GT3 RS (it's a NA car with insane wings, what else should it be?!).

I think Porsche will go for more hp than in the GT3 (to upset the higher drag and to make it the fastest thing with a rear engine ever...) and due to the fact that the GT3 seems to be "on the edge" a bit more displacement seems possible.

Would be great to see the car in Goodwood.

Paris October, oh bloody hell.

But they could prove to the world that they are coming back strong from this debacle by still doing a Goodwood "Lap".

I saw this as well and I'm my opinion, it could very well be turbo across the 911 line. Crazy!!

Yeah, it is weird. Not sure how many realize it, but BMW (who makes MANY models and variants) does not make a single normally aspirated car or SUV anymore, including M. Strange New World...
