A conspiracy theorist could conjecture that the publicity from the engine fires was so catastrophic that Porsche felt the need to distance themselves completely from the GT3's 9A1 to avoid the inevitable jokes, etc. The new engine development and testing would have been underway across a range of displacements and power outputs for years already. Thus a 1 year delay may have been sufficient to switch the RS motor from using the planned 9A1 over to the new standard, presumably simply modifying the heads, etc already developed and tested for the GT3 RS as it was originally intended. Much of the work would have been done on the engine test benches, but the swap would have necessitated running at the 'Ring, etc to be sure, which explains the extra running the car's done over the last year after the design should have been frozen.
I don't know, but it fits nicely enough that my money is now on a non 9A1 base architecture. Which would make the GT3 the last of the 9A1s...

That connects the dots nicely. The 9A1 showed up in 2009, and Porsche has been in the habit of doing a engine evolution every 6 years recently (1997 M96 > M97 > 9A1). 2015 is right on schedule for a new design, and we know it'll see improvements in terms of weight and efficiency. You guys know you can throw image urls into http://images.google.com and it will find similar images?
Just click the camera in the right of the search box and throw in the URL.

Everything after the GT3 will be the new engine. Maybe they decided this before they were really sure what was wrong with the GT3 engine, or the board yelled at someone and threw some good money after bad to get it fixed in a hurry and said "never again, start over"

You guys know how hard it is to find a picture under the 48.8 KB limit on avatars? You'll just have to stare at it until I cheer up. Which could be never...

All this discussion must create nightmares to current GT3 owners...but not to worry...it's all pipe dreams IMO,Porsche won't go radical on us,they never have... But it's fun dreaming/speculating...

Personally I'd rather have the 9A1 than the Mezger, tuning issues aside.
As for "would they" throw current owners under the bus if they felt they had no choice, I don't know, can you think of any examples of that happening before?
(....Gen 1 PCCBs ... coolant pipes .... chain tensioners ... centerlocks ... PDK only in the 991 ... stop drive.....)
