What we might be seeing on the spy-shot teaser models are optical fiber strain gauges attached to the magnesium roof?

Well I think it could be easy:

On the real car, the air outlets over the front axle reduce the front lift -> increase the front downforce.

The test mules have these outlets covered -> wrong aero balance due to lower front downforce.

With the dive planes this delta is less or even 0. But the dive planes increase drag, the air outlets not so much.

For performance tests, drag is not so important (I think they will take them off for v_max testing) but it is important to have the correct aero balance.

That's why they put them on...

Maybe they are still an add-on if the rear wing is adjustable for more downforce to equal this out.

How will they justify it?
That's the marketing dept's problem.

Only on 3.8 RS, GT2 RS. 4.0 RS switched to painted carbon.

Some points from the model:
Subtle air channel in the center of the hood and roof, body colored seat inserts and console cover, bottom of side mirrors in black.

by the way, the model looks almost identical to the white renderings a few pages back that everyone said was rubbish...

Almost identical when the details are basically finalized means "quite different" in reality. For example, the photoshop from pages back had the incorrect wheels (old 997 version) instead of the correct 991 gt3 wheels. Also, the rear dEck wasn't black. Among other missing details was the incorrect rear bumper slits. That render was most likely a 991 turbo with some well-done handmade edits. On a car where 90% of details already exist on the current model (gt3) getting it "almost" right makes it 100% easy to spot a photofake.

As always, hope that doesn't come across as snarky.. Just pointing out differences, collaborative tone is lost in text. :-)

I still have an order in ( still not sure I would move ahead with it). Is no one finding the design a bit busy? What with the unusual rear side bumper treatment and the black front wheel vents, the thicker front spoiler lip which runs further up the edge if the bumper, the flatter rear haunches with the colour deviated black plastic air intake inserts and now the rear black engine cover grill with embedded stop light and cooling grill and the ridiculous rear wing height. The other thing is the car looks higher in the press shot and the mules on the road than the 991 Gt3 somehow?

I just love the blood orange but if I were to move on this it would have to be black to hide the over detail of the design. Frankly I think that's the only colour it should be....

I agree that it looks best in the black mules - I keep coming back to those images and think the rest too busy/boy racer.

I agree, the ONLY colour for this car is non metallic slate grey with Riviera blue wheels, end plates and mirrors. Is that what you meant?

I have to say I agree. I would have killed for PTS blood orange on my 991 GT3 (I did try a PTS slot for RHD back in August 2013 but was told it would affect my early delivery of the car by 6 month - then stop sale - so im glad i took the advice!) and I love the model for all its detail in orange as it shows the contrasting changes unique to this variant, but in real life I feel its a little OTT. By comparison the 997.2 GT3RS I have seen in the flesh (especially a friends who had the decals removes) looks crisp and "clean". The high rear spoiler "towers" look cool but are very tall this time around. Im not sure why they chose to use contrasting black for the rear engine cover ventilation grills - Id probably want those done body colour. Same perhaps with the "turbo" rear fender inlet ducts. Id be curious if the black front fender grill details/vents are infact a plastic insert, again if i ordered orange i may look to have those colour coded as well. The only hard and fast design fail for me is the rear bumper treatment (sides of read bumper have an over and under design). Just some initial thoughts. Ill be awaiting price and spec before making a call off but it will take alot for me to give up my 991 Gt3 which is proving a very practical car on road and track...
