Default 2019 991.2 GT3 Catastrophic Engine Failure

Hello All, I'm not a big poster but figured I would throw this out there. I have a 2019 991.2 GT3 PDK with a 01/19 production date that just dropped a valve at 4400 miles. Car has been at the dealer now since 9/22/20 and Porsche is trying to take the less expensive route of having my engine rebuilt rather than replace the motor which is what both the dealership and I want. It's literally a difference of $5,000, very disappointing. The dealer is on my side and asked me to call 1-800-PORSCHE and escalate the claim which I did a week ago on 10/2/20. Since then I have called two more times and sent an email to a Porsche Executive. I finally got a call back this morning from Porsche NA but still have not gotten the approval for the new engine. This is total BS, I will now potentially have a storied car, lost the car for two months, suffered unnecessary aggravation and will have to waste 1000 miles breaking in the motor again. What do I get for this??? Any advice here would be great. Also if anyone knows how many 2019 cars have suffered the same fate that would be great as well. Thanks in advance for any input.

Good News! Porsche NA gave the green light to replace the motor. Thanks to David D. the Service Manager of my dealership and Shinetta at Porsche NA. Hopefully it all goes smoothly. I'll keep you all posted once I get it back.

A warranty is much like an insurance policy, it is a license to negotiate. You have started the negotiation by posting on RL, I would bet that many folks with this type of experience will offer advice. The more posts will help you. Trust me Porsche monitors this board. Just ask Rob.

My brother had his 19 RS blow a motor at 300 miles. Porsche wanted to rebuild as well. Ended up replacing the motor.

Persistence, firmness, politeness with Porsche NA. Emphasize your lack of confidence in a rebuilt motor of such high performance caliber. Translate your concerns as a “brand quality” red flag. Use their language to convey that nothing less than motor replacement will result in your satisfaction. Right now they are testing how committed you are. Avoid threats, abusive language. Don’t’ threaten litigation, it’s a last and costly resort. You have the upper hand, let them know it.

No way I would accept a field rebuild on a precision engine like this. Especially with all the 991.1's getting new engines for 10 years. Squeaky wheel...

I would be respectful but firm in demanding a new engine. With what we pay for these cars and the low milage it is reasonable to demand a new engine. They should also give you some free service or other value for the lost time IMO.

'dropped a valve' - valve failure? With this rigid valvetrain? 4400 miles- did you buy the car new? Was it broken in properly? Some debate the break-in anyway. First I've heard of this...hope you get the new engine! That would be the right thing.

Not something great to hear, it’s unfortunately still a “storied” car with a replaced engine. No, sellers won’t considered it “storied” but plenty of buyers would jump all over the “story” and offer low as per usual (if you’ve been around RL long enough, you’ve likely seen this).

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, great advice in these post already. Keep your composure, be patient (in the grand scheme of things, try not to let the longer duration get to you), and persist. Best of luck to you..

Yes, many good suggestions. If you don't get the response that you desire from PCNA, then the first legal recourse that you have is arbitration. This is done through the CAP Motors program. You are assigned a mediator at PCNA's expense, and you present your case. The arbitrator determines the judgement, and you can either accept or reject that judgement. The details should be in your car's paperwork.

Keep communicating with them, and this is not some 5 year car it’s basically new and I would only take a replacement. You will also take a hit on resale as some have said because people will choose a non-replacement over a storied car wrong or right. This is a brand issue which Porsche hates negative press from their top buyers, and it’s the right thing for them to do. The last thing they need are these 9k rpm cars having a kaboom reputation. Replacement and some depreciation cash or post expired warranty coverage is a good deal. Good luck.

Had similar experience. This company is all about money. In my case the dealer is not helpful either.

At this price point, hard to believe this is even a question.

Thanks for sharing and good luck. Many Porsche brand loyalist eyes will be watching this thread to see how they handle this....

I’m not sure how rebuilding it is even an option. Normally it scores the cylinder wall. See if the dealer will buy it from you and walk away.
