Update: Removed the Intake manifold and Injector rail.
Looks like this project is having a snow ball effect .
I have decided to do a complete engine reseal. Even though now would be a good time to do the head and cams I have to keep reminding myself to save it for later.
Ordering the rest of the seals tomorrow and then on to the transmission drop.
Taking pictures as I promised .

Good luck, Raj,

That's not a trivial job for most people. The info and pics will be great for those who follow.

Just do the HG too. And do the oil pan gasket to make it a complete engine reseal, and no more leaks! And while the head and pan are off, you can change the rod bearings and might as well do the rings too.

Wow, that lower pad looks like it was made in Switzerland, not Germany. Mine looked like that but it had 155k on it!

Tim, no worries! Just messin.

My best wishes for minimal collateral damage during your maintenance work! BTW, how does your wife feel about you using the bathroom towels in the garage?

I've done the cam cover gasket on the S2 engine which is similar and the important thing is not to overtighten the bolts and use a torque wrench (IIRC they only take 10 Nm), because they will snap flush off the head.

Could've done the tensioner pad while I was at it, but the whole tensioner was replaced 30K miles ago and looked perfect on my car.

These are towels that have been retired from regular use. They are mine to use any way I like . She is awesome.

Currently the car has 118k.
As per the records, the head gasket was done at 91,200 (5/15/02) after what looks like a timing belt failure.
The following items were changed as part of this service:
Timing belt/BS belt
Head Gasket kit
4 Exhaust Valves
Distributor Cap/Rotor
Spark Plugs
Intake camshaft
Coolant
So, in other words, nothing about tensioner or chain. I am glad that I took it all apart because it could have been a big disaster. Based on my recent observations, it looks like in most instances the pads and chain can last over 100K except for that one instance of failure at 61K.
I don't want to do the headgasket now because I plan to modify the head and cams. That might have to wait till next yr.
I did all the belts and roller when I bought it in summer of 2006 at 112K.
I am doing all other gaskets on the car. It will be a complete seal and gasket job except for head gasket.
Since I don't track, I don't see a need for rod bearings. The car is very strong and posted excellent numbers at the dyno so I don't feel the need to do head or rings just yet.
Regards.
Raj

I was joking! You mentioned snowball effect and I alluded to an entire engine rebuild .

That you took me seriously is scary. You are going wrench crazy - put down the wrench, step away from the vehicle, and have a root beer.

Update: 03/01/2008

Removed both bs front housings
Removed radiator and hoses and find out that the they had not used the correct coolant in the car for a while. So, new hoses and waterpump will be ordered.
Removed upper bs housing completely off. Should have the lower off over the weekend and then I will send these parts to the machine shop for cleaning. It would almost be easier for me to remove the engine at this point, LOL
Alternator and alternator bracket is off as well.
I did not plan to do a complete engine restoration just yet but I am tempted to get all new nuts/bolts for the entire engine. I could send everything for plating but that could take at a minimum 3 weeks.
Also getting a new expansion tank.
I skipped on pics today since I was too tied up.
On a side note, you know what they say about totalling your bills. Well I totalled the bills, a whopping $22,100.
No, not me! It was the previous owner, over 8 yrs. She spent close to $5k on timing belt failure and another $5k on pinion bearing which is back again.

Regards.

You keep getting deeper and deeper....it's great to know that car went to someone that's taking such good care of it!

Yeh, all two or three of them. Not a common color. Just that color alone adds value to a Porsche.

And my Pcars have been....Polar Silver, Guards Red and Black. Not a lot of really common colors left. At this rate, my next car will be white....which I personally like better than silver or black. Guards Red? Call me strange but I really like it. But that doesn't mean that I'd prefer it over a less common color. I always choose my cars based on their mechanical and body condition...first.

I saw the (essentially) raspberry color car recently and, given its apparent physical condition and ultra low miles, would not hesistate to drive it (BTW, I have 6 kids and loved the conventional process of getting them).

LOL! And 6 kids...! Knock on wood!

I like red a lot, but lately I've been growing tired of my Guards Red. If I could actually keep it brilliant and glossy then I'd keep on liking it. But I just don't want to polish it every 3 months. Red is one of my favorites. White, particularly on the 968, is fantastic. And of course black looks good on most any car. It's no wonder these are the 3 most common colors.
