No, my post was not a joke and if you have your engine tray on your 964 it should have been removed 20 years ago. It causes an excess of heat build-up and at a minimum is damaging to the top-end of the motor.

Don't want to get into a technical arguement that I cannot win, but seriously?

When you hit a speed bump and your case cracks, you definitely won't have to worry about excess heat buildup.

And again, I'm not trying to get into a technical argument, but that peice is designed there and someone thought it was a better idea than not having it. Also not buying a car because it's there? Insane. I certainly wouldn't expect a typical Porsche owner to be reading this or any other boards getting an anerism over potential excess heat buildup because of the engine cover. Unless Porsche or some similar authority tells me it's a safety hazard to have it there, I'm leaving it.

Porsche added it only to meet new regulations for sound.

For me, when I look at a 964, if it's on there, then I know I need to have a leakdown done. But, I would have one done anyway.

Further...any 911 owner can look at a closed in space that houses an air cooled motor and give you an opinion. It's a dumb idea to close in an air cooled motor...it destroyed mine and many others...

Gourhary, agree with you, but do the leakdown anyway. I just think it's proper insanity to rule out buying a car because it it has an engine tray. I agree that hypothetically putting plastic between the ground and an aircooled engine is not a good idea, but then again, there's a crazy amount of cooling ability built into our cars for pleasure driving (vs. racing).

I just cleaned out my front oil cooler and I'd guess that with the amount of gunk, that its ability to dissapate heat was down by at least 20%, and yet I still have a hard time getting my temp gage over 9pm.

Also to not derail this thread:

Deets on my car, open offer to sell at 40K

105K miles, Cabrio with a D. Moris hardtop. 5spd. Guards red with OEM whale tail AND ENGINE TRAY. Comes with the following parts:

New fan/hub (current one is fine, bought just in case)
Aero mirrors (painted guards red)
RS engine mounts and all applicable hardware
Extra front driver's seat

Bits and peices of the convertible top.
Ton of other maintaince parts...

PPI/Leakdown done 1K miles ago showing good health.

This is probably the best Singer look-alike I've seen. I'm sure he's asking a fortune though.
