951 V8 with Boxter 986/911 996 ABS ----- DONE :-)

Some technical details:
1) The stock 951 ABS sensors work fine with the Boxter ABS
2) You must use either a 986 Boxter or 996 911 ABS pump that has "only 2 rows of pins" in the harness plug. This is important. All the 996 & Boxter ABS pumps that have 3 rows of pins will not work as they are tied in via the bus to the PCM.
Only the 2 row ABS pumps work in stand alone mode.
I used the Boxter 986 ABS pump because it's the Boxter has a closer weight distribution to a 951 than does a 911 (obviously).

+1 on viability of this upgrade for a factory non-abs car. I read Excellence prior to purchasing my car that said all 951 had ABS from the factory from 87 on - my car proves that this statement was printed in error.
Van - same question for your stuff - how difficult to retrofit?
Very cool project by the way.

You would need to covert to the 87+ offsets in front and rear, several good threads on all the parts need for this.
All the bits and piece in the picture above from Van and some custom brake line work for the new ABS parts.
I am sure there is more...
Bottom line, Tony has paved a path but it isn't a simple operation. If I want to do this I would get an existing ABS car as a foundation to build on.

If my car is an '87 would it most likely work to hook up all of Van's stuff or would I have to mod the banana arms for the sensors etc? Would there be a lot of brake line work? I'm assuming so. - Not meaning to hijack but trying to compare the merits of retrofitting the stock system to tackling the project TonyG has done.
Brian, if you start with an ABS car why would you need to do this at all? Is the Boxster ABS better than the stock system? I would think so because it is newer and I can't believe the computer control would not be improved. However, people I know who have relied on the stock ABS under extreme use at the track feel that it works pretty well, but maybe some of you have had different experiences.
The appeal of this mod is that it has the potential to really modernize the platform with parts that shouldn't be that expensive (though we have yet to hear the cost). I'm looking forward to hearing more about this project

Update Report...
Just spent all day on the track. The ABS works excellent. I dropped 1.75 seconds seconds off my best lap time on a track that I've been driving for many years. There is more there, but I had nobody fast to run with (I get bored by myself) and I have to revise my braking points even further since I can brake so much deeper now.
The ABS is not intrusive like the stock ABS is. It's hard to tell that it engages some times, but it does.
The stability of the car is excellent, this using the stock Boxter rear brake circuit proportioning valve (this is on the rear circuit before the ABS pump like it is on the stock 951 ABS pump). I may have to change that with the new larger brakes I'm going to install next week though.
Bottom line... I'm very happy with the results.
Next: Installation of the massive GT3 front & rear brakes....

Tony,
Good stuff. Have you previously driven a 944 with factory ABS on track? Be interested in your impressions on how much better/different the newer system feels.

Back to Tony's thread. This will be awesome for many of us who frequent the track. I can even see guys ripping out their stock ABS and putting this in.
