Just curious about you 3.0L+ guys

There are definitely cheaper ways of doing a 3L build, moderate and then full blown ways. I think it's a little bit like the car in general. Such as the 'while you're in there' syndrome. Sean/JET951 built his turbo 3L 16v s2 motor on the cheaper side of things...BUT that was largely because he could do all his own work. Still, this meant buying new Rods and Pistons, + SFR intake and add the Vitesse V Flex with my previous Stage V turbo. Being able to fab things like exhaust, headers, i/c pipes, catch can etc saves a few bucks too but clearly saving on assembly costs doesn't hurt! Pretty much everything else is just stock and as most of you would have seen, it gets along pretty nicely on the track! It will be interesting if he ever dyno's it!!! But having said that, when most people assume that 16v builds are just so much more expensive you don't have spend countless thousands building up an 8v head that still doesn't perform up to a stock 16v. I don't really see the point in building a 3L 8v without doing pretty major head mods. Of course you can do it but not really worth the whole process if you're not going to improve the overall VE of the motor in my opinion.

Yeah they get out of control quickly. I could have gone the LS route and saved a bunch of money (1/2) but I wanted a hot 4cyl that "looked" original. That being said, after a mahle piston 3.0L, Pauter rods, JME cam, worked & swain coated head, VR stage 5, SFT stage 2 headers, front mount intercooler, intake, full 3" coated exhaust, charlie arms, big reds, escort cup suspension, CCW wheels, plenty of fiberglass parts, new dash, paint, Griffin radiator, Mocal cooler, 46mm tial, and an boat load of "other" stuff that I forget about...I could have something a lot newer that holds value. But, like the rest of us.....I'm retarded and do it because I love the car... But now I have to finish it.
Hell, it only cost me a few thousand bucks to get my ZO6 in the + 530 HP range and I still drive it every day!

"looks original"???????
You've got so many mirror polished parts that you are gonna need a welders helmet to see the engine if you open the hood when the sun is out.
What is your return policy on the kids? Spencer might want to know his options after Paige kicks his @ss two or three times in the first week of ownership.

Putting all the receipts together for the insurance company has been an eye opener for me. I've got over 8 grand in parts for the rebuild on my 2.5 liter. That does include the M-tune, SFR headers, Vitesse turbo, AOR trans, and a bunch of other upgrades. I could have gone with a LS for around the same money. WTF was I thinking???

Though it may not sound as nicely as a 16V, my street 3.0 8V with stock 2.7 head is fast enough, at least for me.
Yes, in terms of mods, Patrick is in a world of his own - must feel a bit lonely up there

The Z has 11:1 compression, CNC ported 215CC Trick Flow heads that were hand blended, custom grind cam w.590 lift, roller rockers, ported t-body, port matched intake, 30lb injectors, LG long tube headers, no cats, x-pipe, and an agressive tune (I have to pull 4 degrees timing when it over 100 degrees).

Oh yeah, on the kids, all sales are final! Their shots are up to date, nails are clipped, somewhat housebroken, but only my 4yr old son uses the doggy door. If you don't like em take them to the humane society but all sales are final. Offering black friday specials as well if you take all three.

I have several offers over $50k for mine but it's not for sale. Like 968TurboS says, if someone were to offer $100k they would get my attention. Counting the original sticker price on the car, multiple shops involved and all the mods it has I was told there is over $250k invested into it.

wow with some of your's all investments, maybe you might consider one of these cheap cars for the daily commute;
376 at the wheels on a stingy dyno but no rebuild.... and you get to keep yours all's 944s pristine.![ducking](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon107.gif)
just kidding really. as with 911s and Boxsters, changing ims bearings are quite an expensive yet very realistic and necessary preventative maintenance item on the Cayman's to do list (including bearing upgrades)... wait too long at your own peril. i'm thinking there are quite the many choices out there (including leaving the Porsche family altogether), for these weekend track cars.

The 3L was always the dream on my car, over the last few years i ended up with the 3L block, crank, Mahle Pistons and a 2.7L head. Last year i considering starting the build before i rebuilt my 2.5L but what really kept me from doing it was the shear cost to build the long block. Now when i say that, it wasnt so much the cost that turned me away, it was the fact my plan was to build a $15k motor and use it mostly on the track, with a few nice weekend drives, runs to the store thrown in. Too me atleast, engines are wear items, just like brakes and suspension. I couldn't justify spending that much on a motor.. i would be pissed if a blew a 2.5L on the track, but i would probably have tears in my eyes if i blew a 3L. If the car was mostly a street machine, then maybe that would have changed things a bit.
I am still thinking of going the LS route but like Jeremy, something in me wants to keep the car looking original. But anyone who has seen my car now will know it is far from original..

Jon, a great thing with a 3.0 is that you can run it at 15psi and go faster than a 2.5 at 18psi.
At this sort of boost and with a reasonable amount of ignition it's unlikely to blow up.

So it's quite apparent that pretty much everyone who's built themselves a 3.0L+ plans on keeping their car for the long haul. Come to think of it, I'd probably do the same. It's not so much of a monetary investment, than it is in having a unique car and getting a lot of enjoyment out of it.
Do any of you out there have any regrets, sitting on the other side if the fence now?
