I think they used EFI as the engine management, not MoTec (different vendors). That itself can be as much as 5% plus. Now when we are talking 500hp, even 5% is quite a bit. I am sure more can be had because I have seen engines pick up as much as 30-40rwhp with a stand alone engine management system over the factory setup.

fair enough, but don´t forget that they claim to have achived that with only 1 bar boost !!!
If you calaculate the power per liter and bar you arrive at 65HP/l/bar compared to 87HP/l/bar. This is a sigfnificant 34% gain on basicaly the same engine.

Actually it doesn't matter who produces the engine management system, what matters is the precise injector control (powerful flyback and FETs) and good support for various triggers and spark types.

Completly agree. It would be possible by refashing the eprom to optimise the stock ECU for max power. Any difference to a motec or else would be non exsisting (if we excluded the air metering system for a minute). Things start to get different in transient response where an aftermarket ECU often offers much more flexibility.

Well My calculations comes to 75 - 87 for Bhp or for Rwhp it comes to 65 - 74.
*My hp/l/bar numbers were base on the estimated 550Bhp at 1.45bar and a engine dyno result of 542Bhp at 1.06bar. The later two were base on a 480 Rwhp and a estimated 460 Rwhp for the variocam engine.
Because we dont know the exact specs on both engines like cams, CR, and other factors, I think it is very possible to come up with this result.
any thoughts?

You can run the Tec3 in full sequential mode and tune cylinder by cylinder as well as having the injection event timing work better than the batch mode the stock Motronics uses. If we also look at the ignition side of it the Tec3 has a much more advanced system with a real time dwell calculation that ensures a very good spark (hot and long!). The ignition side of things becomes more important with higher boost and less of a safety margin on timing.
There are lots of other advantages to a good standalone and we could argue the merits for quite a while. But in a way I do agree – if you are after tungin the old ECU just to make peak power and have no real concern for longevity then with the right chip programming you can attain that goal….for a little while!

I would be one of the last to argue against stand alone. I will swap to an aftermarket ECU soon. Components waiting on the shelfe. It is just always the time missing...
Maybe someone knows more about the engines and can explain. Some of the HP talk just does not sound realistic to me. Needs more than a chart and some numbers to convince me. Technical facts are missing.

Devon - can you give us an update on your projects? (dyno results, driving impressions, boost levels, turbo spooling rpm etc)

I take it back, When they say hp exceeds tq at 4400rpm this is not true, upon further inspection of thier graph I saw how there hp on the side is way out of whack, when you take that into consideration and look again hp and tq are the same at 5252rpm, this shows you how little they know if they really think you can have hp higher than tq below 5252rpm.

The factory fuel management has been replaced with Haltech E8, setup to run sequential injection and individual LS1/6 coils. I will post updated pictures soon.
I have not had much time to drive the car, so the motor is still being broken in with max boost set at 12psi. My goal is to dyno the car only after 2000 miles are on the motor.
The car is fun to drive at low rpm or at high rpm. Off boost the car feels very strong (plenty of N/A torque), and on boost the car is extremely fast (boost and mph climb very quickly).
The engine runs very cool with no sign of overheating especially during the hottest days this summer.

interesting... at what RPM are you getting 12psi of boost?
How is the "supra style" 968 turbo motor going? have you installed it into a car yet? What turbo are/did you put on it?
Do you have any comment on the difference in performance between the SOHC and DOHC turbo motors?
