Kolben Schmidt
means: piston smith or piston forger
Actually, I would assert that's incorrect. Schmidt is not the same as Schmied (forger/blacksmith), and, yes, Smith is the English equivalent of the German Schmidt/Schmit/etc/etc lastname variants. That doesn't make it the same, though. Kolbenschmidt is nothing more than "Smith's Pistons", there are plenty of company names like that in Germany. A lot of old small shops have names that are grafted in a similar fashion out of trade and lastname of the proprietor.

great thread. So what is the horespower potential of a 3 liter for street use? Can one go with a larger turbo because the 3 liter will provide the needed torque at lower rpms so higher hp and still smooth power band? and besides cost, what are the downsides, if any, to doing this?

What A/R do you use in your hotside for the GT35?

I would estimate the HP potential in the upper 400 with factory type fuel management. In the lower 500 with a properly tune aftermarket fuel managment system.

I used a bigger turbo from the Turbonetics T-Series family.

Lightened crank and lightened flywheel have helped with mantaining very good lower end torque.

The downsides I have come across:

1. You will definitely need an aftermarket fuel managment system to properly tune the car.

2. The KEP PP at first is a bit hard for stop and go driving, but once you get used to it it should not be a problem.

Pictures before installation.

The engine assembly and all the fabrication work were done by David Chen.

If that's the same David Chen whose car was featured in the June 1998 excellence mag he seems to know his way around these cars. Very nice project you put together. Keep the picture's comming.

That's the same David Chen. He also did the fabrication work on my friend's 968 3.0L 16v project.

No dyno runs until after I have upgraded the fuel managment system.
