As the owner of a 1988 S4 which is also Venetian Blue with navy blue interior, the sight of this car is freaking me out. It's like a time machine! It's amazing to see what my car would look like in original condition.
Since I sold my Facel Vega HK500 which, as a left hooker here in the UK was not favoured by SWMBO ("You're in the middle of the road, look-out, there's a car coming!!) I have been looking for a replacement, not necessarily a Porsche. However, I know values are still rising and I came across this one:
I don't have a shot of the engine but have seen one and the bay looks like new.
It is a 1986 928 S 2½ with manual gearbox.
It has been very well maintained and continuously used for its 81,410 miles of history and has lots of provenance in the form of receipts for parts and services as well as a long list of Test certificates.
Beautiful color. Not an expert in European pricing but aren't 928s there generally more expensive? I know here in USA, if the engine and interior are as nice as the exterior, with full service history, $26000 USD is not unreasonable.
Title in hand. Registered as NON-OP with no back fees, checked with DMV.
automatic transmission; body and interior are in fair condition, been sitting for about 3 years, paint is in good shape, no major dents or issues, see pictures.
Car starts up with starting fluid but will not idle. all the parts on hand, nothing missing.
power windows, power locks, power sun roof, cruise control, tilt wheel, adjustable head lights, Auto trans, A/C
The interior is in fair condition, cracks in dash.
I bought the car to restore, but don't have time. Would like 6k for it, but taking reasonable offers.
You can buy a pretty good GTS from £30k, so this S3 (S2 with 32 valves) is a bit pricy compared to a GTS. But if you take into consideration that S3 is rather rare in Europe (only a few hundreds were produced) then this price is not so high. If this car is well maintained then it's a good deal for ~£24k. And the color is also great.

One aspect I had forgotten but now recall, with respect to classic cars of this sort of era, is a growing problem of availability of spares in particular for the electronics.
What would you say is the reliability of the ECU's for the 928's and availability of good replacements if one should fail?
Don't worry about the relaibilty, electronic issues and the spare parts of 928s. 928 is the most reliable Porsche and you can purchase any of the parts worldwide at an affordable price (used, remanufactured or even new ones). Maybe the only issue that this S3 model is rare in Europe, so you could have difficulties to buy parts for the engine (only the engine is different compared to S2), but it's easy to find engine parts in the US, because it has the same engine as the 86,5 model.

There are rebuilders in the US and UK who can refresh your computers or provide newly rebuilt units. Also the MAF is a vulnerable part, and again there are rebuilders who can provide a fixed up unit for you.
I just checked the original ad. It's not a 32V S3 model, but it's a simple 16V S2 model, it's not rare at all, average price ~£10-18k.
26k is too much for this vehicle.
