A friend with a sudden 928 passion is asking me about a white/blue '81 5-speed, one-ownered in Texas for 36 years and now being sold after a year by someone on Cape Cod, Bob Larsen. There's an odd jump in reported CarFax mileage in recent years, from 10K to 110K.

Not sure if this is a current ad: http://classiccardb.com/porsche/4526...000-miles.html

Is this car known to this august community?

(I'm not going to look through this thread! Too dangerous, especially with me building a new barn.)

Default Early '86 5 spd for $1400

In case anyone runs across this on Houston CL, I just looked at it and passed, even at $1400.
CL Link

The run down car lot bought it at auction with no keys but clear title. They don't know if it runs or not. It looks like it has potential in the CL pics, but in person it's much rougher. I have better pics if anyone wants to see some. It might be a good starting point for someone looking for a big project, but I'm not.

- Cheap respray looks ok in some areas but is pealing on the sunroof and other in places and is completely flat and rough on the roof.
- Possible small engine fire (underside of hood is pealing in one area but I didn't actually see anything melted)
- Engine has never had a top end refresh and is very dirty
- cracks in windshield
- rear seats are removed, but included in the car
- There are a few receipts in the back, so it might be possible to find the previous owner and get some history
- Last registered 5 years ago
- Seats are decent but starting to get hard
- Odometer over 100k, but trip meter is 000 so probably the gear is broken
- drivers mirror was hanging and scratched up the side of the car
- no rub strips
- Timing belt in place (didn't try to rotate engine)
- Didn't try the clutch
- Lots of cracks in dash and pod
- Big hole in clear coat on the hood

I remember seeing this car listed about a year ago when I started searching for a 928 in earnest, but don't think it ever got mentioned on this Rennlist thread. I don't remember if the listing I saw was on Craigslist or eBay (I'm thinking eBay...), but the ad text was substantially similar so it was likely already with the 2nd owner. Also, the pictures in the link you shared are the same as the ones I saw, so those pics are at least a year old. I didn't call on the car back then, so I don't have any information beyond what is mentioned in the ad.

Has your friend seen the car in person?

I saw that white/blue 5 speed listed about 2 years ago in San Antonio, either on autotrader or cars.com. I called and spoke with the seller, who I believe may have been the original owner. Sounded like a good car, well maintained. I seem to recall it might have had either a recent timing belt/water pump, or recent clutch....serviced by Jones Autowerks in San Antonio. I may still have some notes from my conversation with seller.....will look through my 928 file when I get home. I was going to drive down from Dallas to look at it, but ended up buying a different 928 as my first....then another 928.....

About a year later, it was listed again, with mostly the same photos, but in Massachusetts. I reached out to the seller, who confirmed that he had bought it from San Antonio and had it shipped to his home on Cape Cod.

Two 1980 cars in Arizona. If you want OB style with no rubbies, no spoiler, no rear wiper (love that look), and phone dial wheels. Silver manual trans is 124k miles for $14k and the white auto trans is 40k miles for $25k.

The Houston '86 is not an '86.5 based on VIN.

This 1986.0 928s 5spd with 103k miles on it belongs to my friend. I sold it to him about 3 years ago as a fix it up project. He has not had the time to devote to it to get it nice, so he wants to sell it. The car once belonged to my father, where it sat in a garage for sometime unloved. I bought the car from my dad, got it running and drove it home 4 hours to my place where I changed the timing belt, and got it running. I fixed a few things on the car, just enough to make it drivable and then sold it to my buddy. He in time changed the timing belt, spark plugs and wires, tire rods, shifter linkage and had the car running and driving. The battery went dead during the winter and the car sat for 6 or so months without being cranked. I recently visited him and said that I would help him get it sold so it can go to someone who will do something with it. We went and got a new battery, and I found a cracked vacuum line, which we removed and couldn't find a replacement at the local Advance Auto. We did get it to crank, but it wouldn't idle. He is going to get the vacuum line and hopefully the car will idle once that is in place.

As you can see from the pictures, it would need a paint job and an interior for the car to be nice. Mechanically it has got good bones and wouldn't take much to be in driver condition. The tires on it are old and the front passenger tire leaks air. The front air dam is ripped into 3 pieces, but he has all the pieces, and it can be patched back together with some creativity. It does still have its under tray. It sat out in a heavy rain even while I was visiting and I did not see visible signs of leaking. There is a bit of rust under a rub strip on the drivers quarter panel, and that same panel has a dent in it.

He's asking 5 grand. Please PM me and I will answer any questions I can and also put you in direct contact with my friend.
