NEW INFORMATION

I spoke to Duarte Mendonca at Northeast Watch Works about doing assembly and he was on board. This opens up amazing possibilities:

You can have the dial implanted into the new Seiko watch of your choice!

Two provisos:
  • It must be a 7S26-based watch with a 4 o'clock crown.
  • It must be a new watch available on Amazon.com.

Best of all: Based on the costs of the SNKE51 on Amazon, the dial, the hand set, the assembly, and shipping, I think I can offer the same price as the original deal: $150 for the SNKE51, or any watch that fits the requirements plus $90.

The red hand set from DAGAZ will also be available.

This is just quick math. I think there's enough slop in the price to cover shipping without it costing me money. If I do need to tweak the price, it will only be by $5 or $10. And, if there's any left after all is said and done, I'll put it into the beer fund at next year's Frenzy.

The are nearly 100 watches on Amazon that fill the bill: go shop!.

Just so we're all tracking, these are the steps I envision:
  • I will open up a new thread announcing that orders are open.
  • You will Paypal me a your choice of watch from Amazon, your decision on the red DAGAZ hand set, and the cost of the watch +$90.
  • Once I have the minimum 50 orders in hand, I will tell Harold to start manufacture.
  • Once the order period is closed (2 weeks, I think), I will order all the watches and the hand sets from DAGAZ and have them sent to me.
  • Once the dials arrive (6-8 weeks), I will send everything to Duarte.
  • After Duarte is done and I receive the watches back, I will begin mailing them out (which might take a few days!) in the order in which I received the orders.
Does anyone see any flaws in my plan?

Thanks for putting this together Shawn, truly a great service you are providing to the 928 community. For those of us who not only love the 928, but also the thought of being able to show & wear it every day in an affordable Seiko watch! Truly a Very Merry Christmas indeed!

Pardon my ignorance Shawn, but does the mm size of the case factor into the size of the dial? I notice that the case sizes of the 7s26 Seikos with the stem at 4 o'clock range in from 32mm to 42mm. Does that matter as long as it has the 4 o'clock stem, or should we be choosing a specific case size or range?

Devek9,
You can send me money or check or cashiers check and I can PayPal for you. Let me know if you want to go that route. HTH.

Good question.

The simple answer is: No. Case size doesn't matter.

The complex answer is that 7S26 movement takes a 28mm dial. So, all 7S26 watches take that same dial. Divers have a thicker case than non-divers to handle the pressure. Some watches, mostly divers, have a 'chapter ring' around the dial which makes the dial face appear bigger. But the underlying dial is the same.

Here's a pic of a typical dial and the chapter ring:

This actually allows you to do some cool stuff, like have a chapter ring that is a different color than the dial:

For this dial, I'm thinking about getting another diver and having the case Cerakoted red and getting a red chapter ring to complement the hands and the [!]. That's going to be a special order - not cheap! Cerakoting runs upwards of $125.

Okay, one final question: Lume.

I see two options on lume:
  • Lume the '!', the hour markers, the silhouette, and the '928' at 9 o'clock'
  • Lume the '!', the hour markers and the silhouette.
Personally, I prefer not to lume the '928' (I think it will look a little unbalanced), but I'll defer to the group.

Thoughts?

RKD, can you whip up quick pics of these options?

Make them look kind of like this, so we can see what we're talking about:
