Indeed this has been a long road. However it is a journey that I took voluntarily & I knew it wasn't going to be easy. yes there are parts of the variocam development that I refuse to share. These were hard fought lessons, and expensive to boot. I don't want to fault anyone when they don't give away what they have learned for free. Especially if they make a living using the lessons learned. In the course of my project I did have people that willingly shared information with, me and if it was in confidence I will not share that publically either.

I share many things....but there are at least as many things which I do not share as there are things I do share.
There aren't many pictures of the inside of one of my engines...and the pictures that do exist are "hand selected" by me.
I think Rob Edwards might have said this best, when talking about my oil removal system, for the heads: "Hell, even if someone had detailed pictures of the outside plumbing and drawing of the details, they would never be able to duplicate what is happening inside of the engine....so does it really matter?"
He had a good point, and I allowed him to post a couple of pictures.
I like that Sterling is doing this...and accepts that there are going to be "bumps" in the road.
Small failures are always present in any developmental road....

Truly not my business Guys ... and Sterling is a friend. The difference in my humble opinion, is that Greg you run a business. Just my 2c, I really believe Sterling, that with open information sharing, there would in fact be a small but successful cult following of 928's driving around the world with Variocam.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... variocam on a 928 is not cost effective. you could purchase multiple boost kits, (choose the most expensive one you can find and buy 2) and still not spend what the variocam costs... you can get multiple times the gains of variocam, for 1/4th cost......

So sorry to hear about this Sterling. Frustration is probably the nicest word to use at this time. Thanks for pressing the outer limits as a 928 Privateer.

Sterling, you are a god.
I have no idea how many hours of planning, work, waiting, planning, more work, more waiting you have in this car. The cost of those is a labor of love I know but still a cost. Not to mention the cost in actual dollars.
I've been following your progress on this car since I got here 5 years ago and I'm always amazed at your level of ambition and talent (two things I admire but that are rare in the same individual).
Good luck with the rebuild and whatever direction it takes you in. Take a deep breath, stand back, and then keep pushing forward.

Sterling I just got back to this thread to answer your question.
regarding pulling the dipstick out and taking a small sample to check for metal in the oil.
It is actually a very quick way to spot internal damage possibly before it gets to be catastrophic.
The only thing to consider is how the oil sample is taken,
as putting the dipstick will usually remove small pieces of dipstick tube and possibly taint the sample,
hence the suggestion to use some lamp cord put down the tube .
Sorry to hear about the broken belt ,
if that has happened then turning the cams may offer some info on the failure.
It is quite possible for the ball seat on the anti back flow valves in the heads to be loose,
if so then the seat can get pushed upwards and then cut off the oil supply to the head once this happens you have about 2 mins of running before the cams seize

Sterling,
As others have said - so sorry to hear this happening. You have a beautiful car, and have put a lot of time, energy, and $ into it. Hope this time it "all comes together", whateever direction you proceed with the rebuild of your engine.
