Sterling, man that sucks, but I have to ask, what belt was that and how long had it been on?
Also, do you think that the vario part or your tensioner had any thing to do with the failure?

Sucks man, let me know if there is any thing I can do to help you.

The belt hasn't been on more than 3 years with less then 10K miles. The parts that I can see look good. I don't have anything off other than the belt covers, and if I can't get the balancer off easily, I will leave it all buttoned up until I can get it out of the car.

Was it a Porsche belt?

Something had to have locked up, even a Conti should have lasted longer than that.

Are your plans to forge on with the ITB upgrade or try and repair this damage.

How are the cam gears...and what do the base of the teeth look like on the belt...curious to see if the failure is similar to what happened to mine..

check the new heads for the ball seats being tight,
if they can move then add some green loctite and stake them in place.
With a broken belt is would mean some bent valves,
so your new heads will cure that

I've seen his car, it's epic.

I know it isn't much considering but i'd throw some cash toward god to help. The internerdz helped rebuild the holbert car, after all. PM me and I'll throw in paypal $50 towards karma against my experiencing something as random.

I'll be pulling my engine soon, too. That is, if I decide to put all the money into it that it needs, and not part the 928 out. Right now it just needs too much goddamn work and money to actually feel like this deserves to be alive any longer.

engine is out of the car and on the stand. moved the car over to one side of the garage and started to get the garage cleaned, organized and set up for engine work.

I got the balancer off, and the belt is shredded around the bottom half of the crank gear. Tensioner seems to be working fine, and the waterpump seems to be ok.... I will tear into it more this week.

Hey Sterling, don't forget to take a few pictures for us. make sure that water pump dose not have a low bearing growl that may cause it to lock up at speed.
The only other thing that could lock up are the cams. if it was a pulley you would have heard it squeal.

I wish you luck and Hope it is not a cam journal

I've got my money on a worn crank timing gear.
