In the 944 world when that tensioner fails many people have experienced the tensioner itself ripped from the head then smashing all the valves. In extreme cases when the failure is at high RPM, valves can break off which damages the piston / cylinder wall as it bounces around.
So yes, two bent valves is very lucky. Think of the force pulling on the tensioner mount and camshafts when the chain suddenly stops moving. When the tensioner failed in my 944S it destroyed both camshafts.

He's not re-using the heads/valves and there is no damage to the pistons. What he had happen sounds real lucky to me.
