Easy installation - direct fit - works well!
Overall I am pleased although the real test will be this weekend at Inde Motorsports Ranch.

Brad-
That cable does in fact go behind the dipstick. In my limited experience and without admitting guilt, it's simple/easy to unbolt the dipsick tube rather than disconnect and re-route the harness. And... After looking at the harness damage to Rob Edwards' GT from rubbing against the tube, I decided to add a cable tie there to hold the tube to the harness snugly. It's a nice black Porsche cable tie too, although ou would probably want something in a rainbow hue to mesh nicely with all the new colors on your engine.

Revived my CR-1 radio ... for some reason I remembered from the 968 that "coDE" would display when you power on the radio ... mine showed nothing in the display on power-on.
Someone posted the other day that you have to hold down the AM/FM button for two seconds, then enter the code.
D'oh!

Hey Bob--
Will that fit that nicely in an '82? Not sure if there were any differences in the console such that mine would have to be altered.
swstereo is in the Amboys, which is a nice hour in the 928 for me. I plan on going to see them if I don't buy a stock stereo and just plug it in. Seems like you recommend them, did you get a good deal?

don't recall now how I found them. not sure it was a particularly good deal. but I called the guy to ask about it as a straight replacement for my montery, he was very helpful explaining the installation, and they installed the AUX/ipod jack. I think my car had a Montery SQR-22. no idea about it fitting in an '82. swstereo may know based on the radio you now have. actually I have two monterys, one from the 928 and one from my 911. in discussion the guy told me it may be possible for them to canibalize between the two to get a working unit. took the easy path and got the dearborn.
as James suggested, I see a lot of positive posts for the CDR220. what sold me on the dearborn is being a straight up swap, and how close to original it looked even to having a darn cassette...

Finished instrument cluster and pod switch LED conversion.
Pod is now 100% LED — not a single incandescent bulb left (am I going green or what?)
Pretty damn cool looking.
Write-up coming within next few days.
Interesting tidbit: two of the bulb positions weren't used in the original backlighting PC board: the "Cat" indicator and the "Check Engine" indicator. I went ahead and lamped those. They turn on during the lamp check when key is first moved to ignition position; they both turn off after the engine is started. I wonder if they ever turn on again under any other circumstances?
Already had to replace one failed LED (one of the LCD info display backlights); it quit in some pretty damn hot weather yesterday. Hope that doesn't indicate that there's not enough airflow in the instrment cluster to keep the LEDs below 85 °C (185 °F), their maximum operating temperature.
It took me 6 minutes to remove the cluster to replace that LED (started with the knee protection piece already off, though); probably about an hour to put it back (I was taking more pictures for the second half). I'm getting pretty fast at removing/replacing the instrument cluster.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Next up, time permitting: completing work on instrument lighting dimming (waiting on a part for that; prototype already working) and replacement of incandescent bulbs with LEDs in all the center console. With that done, I believe there won't be a single non-LED bulb left in the car outside of the headlights (HID) and fogs/driving (halogen).
I ran low on fuel yesterday, so I got to see the LCD info display go red for the first time. Looked great!
(Click photos to get a higher resolution versions)
Note: it's surprisingly difficult to get accurate photos of the instrumentation lighting: red tends to color shift to orange in certain places where it's slightly brighter, and intensity differences show up a little differently. This is one case where the photos actually aren't quite as good as what you actually see/perceive. Actual colors look more uniform. Intensity appears more uniform on the LCD info display backlighting. Legends on the indicators "PARK BRAKE", "STOP LAMP", etc. are a little crisper. Bright (feature on) / dim (feature off) on the pod switches is probably hard to distinguish in the photos, but is actually noticible.

I also took the time to label the back of the instrument cluster and the four connectors a little more clearly. I was getting a little paranoid about screwing something up right when I was so close to the finish line (especially since some single malts may have been involved in tonight's work).

Final (as far as I know, for now
) instrument cluster backlighting PC board, front and back. A little different than last time I showed it: it's now got a slight modification (note a resistor has been added) and additional labeling and polarity marking has been done.

Kept up with mercedes c 6.3 amg. Well, a bit anyway. Drove at highway at 55, then road opened up, dropped it to third, pulled away. He followed to close the gap, but did so only slowly. After letting him pass, did the same thing and he could not pull away. Or was he being nice? Haha. Although he was faster, i got thumbs up on my 1984 s2 from him.

Hey Ed, where did you get your LEDs? John Curry also highly recommends this but I'm still unclear where you get the LEDs, whether they need any fiddling or modifications, etc.

Give me a day or two to do the write-up; I'll provide details on exactly what to get, the rationale behind those choices, and a few tips for things (mostly minor) to do to get things to fit and operate nicely.

Ed, Dash is looking super. Looking forward to your finished write-up. Just installed the Superbright high power led's in the VW interior lights purchased from Roger. What a difference. http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...2Ffestoon.html www.928sRUS.com
