New plug wires and boots, cap and rotors. Had to drill out the rotor hex bolts as the PO had rounded them off. Original plug wires were in terrible shape. She runs a lot smoother now.
As part of a suspension refresh I pulled the rear suspension pins for the bottom shock mounts. After reading how prone these are to seizing I was pleased these came out easily.

Clean the preservatives off those threaded adjusters and see if they move at all. In the US good used ones come from 928 International. They usually corrode into one solid piece with a little water and a dash of salt, good used is an option if yours are suffering from that.

I agree, beyond saving! Other than the top mounts these are scrap, just ordered GAZ Gold coilover kit with 500/350 springs. Fortunately the rest of the suspension isn't in bad shape.
Help ! I put new battery in my86 yesterday and started it up and it ran fine for about 30 seconds and then engine stopped. Now its locked up tite I think its thrust bearing failure.I am sick over this ! I guess I now need another block or engine? I just replaced the torque tube and both flex plates! If any one knows where I can find a low cost replacement .I had just gone over the car spent over 1k in parts now this if anyone can help I would greatly appreciateany ideas. Rob
So I know it's not the same....but a good and reputable shop offered to fix the outside door handle on driver's side....which broke in the typical fashion...for 350 all in.
There's more material on Rennlist about how much that job sucks than there is about doing the job itself...I didn't want to spend 4-6 hours doing it..but seriously...that's OK I think.
Oh yeah...new axle on driver's side - bye bye blender vibrations...

How do you know its it's thrust bearing failure? Does the engine turn over by hand? Have you drained the oil and looked in the oil filter and on the magnet at the end of the drain plug?
Please start a new thread on this.
I drove my new to me 86.5 5 speed one owner 70,000 mile S3 up to Canada to introduce to Colin.
Within one hour the twin clutch was out and flywheel off to machine shop. Colin then did his magic to the intermediate plate and throw out bearing.
He then addressed small leak back at fuel pump.
Next was check out the timing belt which had new cam gears and belt.
Removed the cruise control board and soldered 100 plus points.
Next he removed cold start valve and cleaned.
Next was to remove the MAF and ordered a rebuilt from John Speake.
He then removed all the UNGO alarm system and the hardware for old radar detector. This was a lot of crap to do right.
To top it off he shortened my shifter pattern and height.
Did the fresh oil and filter and I think that is it.
It was a great drive home and enjoyed watching him perform so efficiently.
Thank you Colin and Michael.
