Your teardown pics show that the 'new' box is still filthy on the outside, and you are working on the floor. Carefully replace the cover, and drag the whole thing to the coin car wash with a can of engine cleaner, and a spray bottle of Orange Cleaner/Degreaser. Get the case clean enough that you'd be comfortable putting your bologna sandwich on it. Clean like that means that no crud will accidentally find its way inside as you work. Then make a clean area on a workbench, or invest in a work cart that has a tray top on it. Put a layer of butcher paper down so you can find things on it. Parts go into a separate plastic tray so they don't get kicked into a corner or knocked away and lost forever. I use cheap plastic storage containers from Wal-Mart, and larger plastic trays like the ones the TSA uses for your x-rayed carry-on bits. The throw-away Glad storage trays with lids from the grocery store are great for small parts, cheap enough to keep in stock for the tiny parts, and durable enough to survive the dishwasher when you are done.
Gearbox assembly is no less a clean-room activity than hi-po engine work. It's tough to work on parts that are still coated with old gear oil, hard to keep them clean, hard to see wear patterns, hard to see if junk is in bearings or bushings. I know you pride yourself on being able to support a competitive race effort in spite of [insert self-imposed shortcoming here], but no need to do marginal work under marginal conditions just to increase the 'in spite of' factor. At least not on purpose.

Thanks for the clean room tips, but Im not taking this box apart, as Im not qualified based on screwing up the first step, pulling the cover off.
by the way, do you have answers to my question regarding the cover elements and assembly back on the trans?
as far as the LSD, Ive raced open diffs, S4 diffs, (and S4 started out new and ended up pretty old with breakaway torque even less than 12ftlbs), and stronger LSDs such as found on Andersons and Fans car. Isnt stock new spec, 14.7ft-lbs? What I have found is most everyone with LSDs have them too wound up! it causes them instability on a lot of high speed and slow turns. mine, in the holbert car, which was weak, was only too weak, at high temp (end of race) AND at 2 spots at all the tracks I visit. turn 2 at sears, turn 5 exit at thunderhhill. control with compression braking is excellent at all tracks and I dont see a benefit to going stronger. I raced scots 82 and it has the stronger LSD, and didnt notice any control benefit. what would you want or expect to see? the main reason is to have it feel like it does to me now, but not have it ever break away, like it does for me when hot on turn 2 sears, for example. when it spins, it wears more. I dont know what the LSD is in the 82s, but Ive heard they are much more stiff compared to the S4 LSD.
as far as cleaning the gear box. good idea . Illl button it up and spray it down. then, i think its going in the car.

LSD breakaway at 14 lbs/ft is probably less than half of what you should consider as absolute miimum acceptable, especially for a high-HP car with sticky tires in competition. Plan on a new set of LSD clutches and disks as part of your refurb effort. Easy while the box is out of the car.

Greg Brown set my LSD at 40 FTlbs break away torque. Your welcome to drive it any time to see if you see any difference in it. I am signed up for NCRC on march 05 weekend but will be running with the Diablo prosche club on Friday March 04. I think its like 50 bucks to have an instructor as an extra driver using the same car.
Bummer is I have to have the car teched by a third party for the event. Any licenced mechanics on here who can tech my car at T-Hill so I dont have to drag it all the way to Sacramento to be teched?

looks like my top cover is a hybrid. 87 and later stuff, with the gear lock out from the earlier years. anyone recognize the cover parts?

I dont know what is stock, but the spec is 7ftlbs all the way to 25ftlbs in the WSM. sure, goind stiffer can be good. I wish i had just a little bit more grab on the LSD,but its not a problem. i wonder what the 82s come stock with. I know they are better and can be adjusted, and maye thats what you have in your S4 box. ( it can be retrofited to the older stronger LSDs, but it requires some shiming. Greg Brown type stuff)

good point.
what do you think about the transmission covers I posted. Is it strange to clearly have the gear lock out style part of the earlier cars vs the 87 and later version, whichalso has the lever that is mounted to the top cover, vs the early cars which have it come in from the side along with the spring.

Thanks bill. you are the best!
wow, we could attack it this weekend, if you dont have plans. I could start by getting the car way up high and maybe invest in a better second jack and buy some 2x4s to make a cradle to fit the transmission or something.
we should all take bets on what the ole holbert transmission will look like on the inside. sheered shaft or a blender full of crushed gear pieces!
what do I need for the torque tube rebuild. some pvc pipe and the (3) bearings from anderson?

why do I have part #4 from the drawing from an early box, yet the S4 box shows a slightly different variation. I do have the arm that mounts on the top cover, not that comes in from the side, obviously.

This weekend should work. Probably Sunday as I'm most likley going to be helping the guy who bought my supercharger do a bit of tuning on Saturday - maybe not. So Saturday or Sunday depending.
