Default '82 16V 4.7L Build - OE+ Goal

So it goes.....another car, another forum to join. Right. Check, and check.

Let me introduce myself a little since you all have no idea who I am. I'm Jeremy and I'm from the western side of MA. I'm an import auto mechanic by profession and come from a mk2 VW, and early '80's Audi background. It was only a matter of time before I made the jump the brand of my long-time obsession. Not quite the car I thought I'd be getting into the scene with, but you've got to start somewhere right?

After much research, and lurking around in here I recently bought what I believe to be a Competition Packaged '82 928. All the details of this car are as blank as a white piece of paper to me. Unfortunately for me, there was no kind of paper trail attached to this vehicle other than the title when I picked it up. So I'll be going through all the preventative maintenance and "piece of mind" work as if this car were a basket-case. I really hope it doesn't turn out to be such, I've got a pretty good record going so far with my other cars, so here's to hoping this isn't the first headache.

My goal with the car is to get it to my satisfaction and with a little OE+ flavor. Tasteful is the objective. It's no show car, and it will not be treated as such. I thoroughly enjoy driving my cars, and this one will be no exception.

Will be installing a set of Hella H4's in the place of the sealed beams as soon as they arrive.

Next, fixing the sloppy radiator install from either a p.o. or the dealer prior to my purchase....then, this god-forsaken sloppy shift is going in the bucket. Damn front ball bushing....

Anyways, I look forward to learning more about these cars and chatting with other people with the same "sickness" (as my parents call it) as me.

Hi Jeremy welcome , sounds like you got a great car to start your journey with (928 Ownership).
I would suggest that you read through the FAQ at the top of the page.
Also, Click on user CP and click on edit signature then add the year and model of your car, the trans type, and any options it may have ,
the color s or any other things and where your located.
As added info here are some of the things you should consider with a car with no repair history read through these links, good luck, Stan

...the same "sickness"
Ah, step 1 ... admission... I am XXXX and I have an inexplicable affinity for low value, old, German cars that, on rare occasions, go very fast.

Some of the other symptoms that I have begun to identify...

I spend ridiculous amounts of money in pursuit of a reliable, highly modified car that handles like a pure Porsche.

I defend my spending by instantly ridiculing all who attempt low budget fixes. If it is an expensive fix that I myself have done it is money well spent and satisfying. If not, then it is seen as "A fool and his money..."

All defects found on my glorious machine are due to the PO who was clearly not worthy.

I often buy a second, third or even fourth project car before the first is sorted out. This allows even greater commitments of spending and fools my brethren into thinking they have only a touch of the sickness - not the full-blown variety.

I secretly detest the other models as inferior or econoboxes - especially those of the bazarro air-cooled world.

I feign ignorance of the other, lessor brands; but occasionally steal motor mounts, lifters, wheels or other pieces as "upgrades." I admit that there are really a very low percentage of enthusiast who are capable of properly tuning a Porsche but of course include myself in the 10%.

I quietly mumble "Way too ghetto" every time I see wheels larger than 17" and sometimes audibly suggest that many mods are dismissed as non-functional and not belonging on my 170 mph street car.

I have a recurring nightmare where my Mom asks me the second most dreaded question..."How many cars do you have?" Followed by the first most dreaded question..."how many of them run?"

About half of my posts I regret within 10 minutes of pressing "Post Quick Reply"

You have three choices about the shifter. 1) replace the plastic ball cup with another plastic ball cup- hard work and only good for a couple of years. 2) 928 motor sports metal ball cup- good forever but really really really hard work. 3) Roger's front cup-less solution. Looks easy and should shift nice. I just did #2, but I would never do it again. This even with the motor out of the car!

I, too added the Motorsports' metal cup upgrade while the motor was out. It took 2 people to get it tightened correctly... one held the wrench while the other moved the gearshift! It works fantastic, but if it EVER comes loose I will be EXTREMELY bummed!

I did the number one option about 7 years ago the complete metal socket with plastic insert it still works just fine. Pretty simple to install as well. The old very brown 1980 has a ton of miles and many on the track where shifting can get a bit spirited

Welcome Jeremy. There is a sort of condoned insanity when it comes to these cars. Some of us need to be committed to the closest state mental facility for the $$$, time and resources we put into these cars, I am one of those. Regardless, the symptoms of this illness include fraternization with other equally affected victims of ownership of a 928. It is in this, the shared camaraderie that makes much of the suffering more than tolerable.

Thanks for the welcome(s) guys! Maybe meet up with some of you at the Wilbraham Session?

Still getting acquainted with this forum layout and stuff so pardon my partial noob-ism.

Non-cell phone pictures soon! I swear!
