Engine work seems fantastic.
I just don't understand poetry.
Good luck,
Dave

You have to be in the high finance to understand that kind of poetry.

An alternative for obviating the worry about impaired head bolt hole thread strength would be to just timesert all 20 head stud holes. Which was even more work than blowing the mud out and incessant cleaning.

It wouldn’t be a good alternative. I wouldn’t want to fix what is not broken and can be protected not to become broken.

There’s a tentative plan to test all stud options at some point, but the 928 S4 stock bolts have held up against so much load that these two engines will get stock bolts. To get the tension right for those bolts, one needs the thread protected. With studs it would be less critical.

Lesson 6:

Great long ideas
Even when researched well
Only make you rich
If, perhaps distracted by an itch,
You forget about them
And later remember you didn’t sell

Default “Taylor” drilled cranks

Everyone in Kentucky/Ohio border is busy, any leads on a good shop that can get the web drilling (aka “Taylor” drilling) of the stock 928 S4 crankshaft done? The closer to Cincinnati, the better.

Now an after school special for those pre-schoolers who plan to nibble with venture capital.

Speaking about machined thrust bearings. Mark at 928Intl used to sell cut ones years ago. Not sure who did them for him but they looked nice.

As much as it pains me to say it, in my opinion, Sweden is one of the few countries that has followed sane and evidence-based policies in their Coronavirus reponse. For example, closing schools has no evidentiary backing and good models say it's counterproductive. I am ashamed to see schools closed in Finland and Massachusetts. The Swedes have made one big mistake so far, namely not protecting the retirement homes well enough. They really should have moved the staff on premises and test the staff frequently, so a total lockdown for retirement homes.

On other news, John Kuhn is making slow progress in fabricating a tool and process for turning any 928 block into a squirter block. Photos below. Also, a crank-drilling scheme has been developed for the stock crankshaft such that we know have a service provider that can actually implement it.

Default A Crankshaft heading to coordinate measuring machine and drilling

John is having a modern crankshaft shop map the crankshaft and develop a cnc program to web drill the stock S4 crankshaft. First test shaft heading that way, this will go into one of my engines:

You should address your compliments to John by email or something. I've been even more useless than average for the project over the last month, just laying on a deck chair in Hawaii buying junk bonds, equity REITS, and some low-beta stocks. (Only thru mutual etc. funds on personal account, picking individual securities would be way too much work wearing swimming trunks in the 85 degree pacific weather.)

Lesson 10:

The market doesn’t care
How you fare
If you cry
How hard you try
What price you paid
How much you prayed
It just cares about the trend
Your only friend
Until the bend
In the end
Cliche, say them critics
But true, me putting up clinics

Default Some parts from plating

Cost a lot of American pesos, a couple helicopter drops worth, but I guess they look nice:

I don’t support mandates or bans, even when they are imposed on my poetry. Shame on you supporting the government treading on our liberties!

On the plating job:

The firm that did it is True6 and the coating is “Yellow Cadmium”. It’s a fairly detail oriented parts reconditioning service, they remove bearings and mask parts etc. Where it’s cheaper they sub in whole new hardware like washers. It was well over $1000 to have all the relevant components from two engines reconditioned by them. I might have overpaid, but they did pay individual attention to every numbered component, and better get it done right.

The only parts that I exempted from coating are fuel system components that have internal spring components (dampers and pressure regulator).

Cadmium plating is the gold (pun!) standard for all the threaded parts because of the lubricity but it’s a very expensive process in continental US now that it is once again allowed. One can get it done cheaper in Mexico, but we’re not picking the cheapest option for everything in this project.

Zinc plating is cheaper and wholly adequate with some additional coating for most parts. It’s just quite not as good on threads as cadmium.

Default A shim system to adjust the squirter angles.

The stock non-squirter block has some room, although very limited room, to adjust the squirter spray jet angle when stock squirters are added. When using various different custom piston designs, one may want to make some angle adjustments to optimally locate the oil spray jet. The angle adjustments will require chamfering the crankshaft counterweight for oil jet clearance, but with custom pistons a lot of metal needs to come off the crankshaft counterweights anyway.

Here are John’s tools for adjusting that squirter angle:
