Tuomo, in order to machine the groove in the center main the way John is doing it, you need a CNC milling machine which I do not have. However using the same fixture to hold the bearing shell and an adjustable boring head is another way to do the job.

Default Narrower groove

Here’s a bearing grooved with a narrower groove for more bearing area. We’ll add some additional feed holes to the groove after some flow area computations.

While John has been grooving, I’ve been skiing and enjoying video evidence of MSNBC and the New York Times editor attempting math:

Default How’s the lockdown *****?

Interesting spring!

John has my stuff in the “lockdown” while I’m voluntarily and preemptively self isolating in Hawaii indefinitely. This social distancing thing is way easier for us anti-social a$$hole hermits who keep our own hours and no one else’s counsel anyway...

By the way, a little shout out to us corona refugees: This article reads like “the emperor’s new clothes” — obvious but still worth saying out loud:

Good luck,

Luck is very much needed, as I’m buying equities now and not stopping until my fingers get burned! The settings of that bonfire of life savings will be nice, though:

Tuomo, any 928 cars around in Hawaii? The Corona virus has arrived to the islands according to the news.
Stay well. The short shift kit I made for the blue car is working very well.
Bad situation in Finland. https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidni.../#30b8a5395893

I think it’s actually going to be ok. Finns are being very cautious this time because they don’t have huge slack in the hospital capacity. Everyone with medical training and in the 18-68 year age range can be drafted to work in hospitals. Uusimaa is going to be isolated from the rest of the country. 70 and over need to stay at home. They predict these measures will allow the hospital system to process the sick.

Millenium is still operating and blocks are in line to get Nikasil plating. No word from Carrillo on rods, or whether they are operating.

Default Rods in three days

The connecting rods will be ready in three days, at which point they need to go under pretty intense quality assurance effort to see if the are dimensionally correct i.e. within the specified tolerances. They cost enough to be exactly right without any adjustments, or they’ll go back.

Update: Rods and block are done and will ship soon.

Default Squirter install demonstration

Here’s a demo how the squirter install tooling works. Photos below.

After staring at my spreadsheets and thinking about it, I've come to the conclusions that piston oil squirters are even more necessary for high rpm engines than for low-rpm forced induction engines. The reason for this is that as long as the rpm is low, one can use wide rings and heavy pistons. The wide rings and heavy pistons deal with the excess heat relatively easily. For example, stock '87 engine with or without squirters can take a huge amount of boost safely as long as the rpm stays below stock redline. In contrast, a high rpm engine (especially a long stroke one) needs thin piston rings to prevent ring flutter and light piston assembly to prevent rod failure. Without piston oil squirters, the thin rings and light pistons can't handle the heat. This will lead to the piston overheating and softening, crown cracking, and the wrist pin pulling out of the piston pin bosses. So in my opinion all high rpm engines (adjusted for stroke, so it's really about piston speeds and accelerations) can benefit from the piston oil squirters being installed.

Default Long custom rods are here

The custom rods are here. They accept two alternative bearing options and run with the stock 78.9mm stroke crankshaft. Made out of steel, not gold, although the price tag might suggest otherwise.

Default Passing the torch

Old vs new piston-rod combo:

Same crankshaft and deck height, so very close to the same length from the top of the crown to the center of the big end bore.

Looking good Tuomo- When will _this_ bitch run? John is a hero for even thinking about extracting the current motor from the car with all the additional stuff to be R&R'ed.
