Gees Mark - looking at those pictures you are incredibly lucky to be unharmed - another testament to how well built these cars are. Very glad you are OK - cars are replaceable - people however are not.

I would love to think that the chassis has a chance, but the more I look at it, the more incredibly distorted it looks. I pulled off the fenders, bumper and swaybar and things look pretty bad.
I also tried to start it and I just couldnt get it to run without the flywheel or clutch making some noise. sounds like things are rubbing, plus, I just noticed a large crack at the top of the bell housing. So, its toast.

I am glad to see you posting again, I know the next few days you are gonna be at a minimum very sore. You know your body better than anyone so if you even think you should go see a doc again don't hesitate.
OH, don't forget about our deal on the carbon fiber X-brace and accidentally throw it away in all the excitement. I have a place of honor all ready for it to be displayed, even if it is in pieces.

My condolences Mark, take good care of yourself. Neck injuries can take a while to become apparent, so please keep a close watch over things. As for the car, it went out full of **** and vinegar just like it should have. I agree that if it can be repaired, put the original engine back in and see if Porsche would like to have it in the museum...or maybe PCNA in the lobby - down the street from me so I could see it all the time!
Take the stroker engine and get it repaired and into another chassis, the Rennlist Car, and start a new chapter.

Now would be the time to let Porsche put the Holbert car where it belongs, in its museum exactly as it went on the flatbed. The 928 heritage was always about going fast and that's how the Holbert VIN number wentout, on the track upholding the honor of the 928 legend.
They can put the next generation 928 (Panamera coupe) next to it after it sets the next speed record and in 2033 when it goes out racing, as Porsches' are supposed to do put it next to yours.
Does anyone from Porsche know the history of your car? I hope they understand what it represents to the marque.

Yes the Holbert car can be fixed, problem is it's not cost effective especially on Marks budget. Many vintage race cars with a much larger impact on racing history are still running around. Very few (if any) are the 100% original chassis / body etc.... Most of these are worth significant amounts of money which makes rebuilding them a bit more cost effective.

I've been thinking about this since I read about the accident. Of all the cars Porsche has tucked away in their warehouse, they never seamed to care much about this one. Very strange indeed.

Glad to hear you are OK Mark, breaks my heart to see your beautiful race car looking like that knowing all the time and effort that was put into it.
But as they say, time to move forward take the donor car and get back out there and kick some ***!

transfer what you can to the new shell.... and then it's time to pull out the ole tin snips and cut out 4inch by 4 inch pieces of the shell. Sell them to the folks as a "piece" of the Holbert car...and save the nice piece with the body VIN as a special auction going to the highest bidder.

It is very depressing, but it is a labor of love I guess, to keep putting working on these cars.
It sure looks like the chassis can't be saved, but Im not a body guy. What im most concerned with right now, are the engine and transmission. I did start it up and it does run, but on 4 cylinders, because of the passenger side coil being broken at the connector. also, the powersteeng pump on the driver side is rubbing on the chassis and the belt is rubbing, so it just starts to smoke in a few seconds. Plus, some grinding of the flywheel/clutch, in the bellhousing due to it being cracked up top as you can faintly see from the picture.
I dont know what to do. I'm leaning toward the Mark Anderson chassis, as it will be a roller and I could then transfer everything over while minimizing the work to actually build an entirely new car, and then weld in a new cage (or cut out the old one with a plasma cutter and put it in the new chassis).
Of course the worse thing about this is the economy right, and my work situation to be able to really bounce back from this set back.
But, I have had some incredible memories with the Holbert 928. Speed GT races, club races, driving to the track, driving to the market every saturday for a quick speed fix, its really been amazing. Now, its just a wad of metal in my driveway from a fluke accident.
I'm having a hard time getting through this, but you guys are sure helping! A lot! So, I thank you for the concerns, support and generous offerings. The Rennlist surely is a special place where this kind of common appreciation for a car, can actually create and forge friendships and provide assistance to just about anyone that asks.

By the way, regarding the race weekend, is I had a heck of a race with Darrel Anderson before the accident. Nice when a top driver, in the top car, suddenly has near the same HP and weight as you do due to a car change. I had a little edge in the HP department, (325rwhp vs my 365rwhp), but Sears is about handling and he really was getting close under braking and through the carocel. I have all sorts of footage. (front and rear vew from both races) Plus , i have his footage from his main car (the 750hp Griggs mustang, as he was following me for much of the first race due to his transmission only having 4th gear, equaling out our HP comparison)
What a way to go out, but it (the Holbert 928) did go out doing what it did best. Run hard and fast!
Time to get back to work.

Wow Mark holy ****! Glad you are okay, take good care of the neck injury... Sounds like you can transfer as many racing parts as possible to a new chassis and make some new racing history with another 928. As far as the Holbert car goes, maybe somebody thats into the historical significance could restore it eventually?

I dont know enough about the frame technology, but im sure it could be pulled straight again with a lot of work. I also have the matching original block in a plastic bag in my garage as well, so that the old engine and chassis could be reunited, but thats looking at a lot of work, for sure. The damage is very strange. the center tunnel is very distorted, but the cage has seemed to not have moved. All of the damage seems to be on the front clip. maybe this is all that it would need.

As long as you are OK, everything is fine.
A car is just a collection of parts. It can be fixed or replaced. You can't.
I suggest you start from a "fresh" shell to build a new racing 928, using what you can from the Holbert car and some new parts.
Such a crashed tub will never be as strong as it was.
Many racing cars have been "rebuild" with only using the chassis number plate as original part....
A tub is just a big part, nothing less, nothing more.

Your right and thats what im now focusing on. The pulled muscles and bruises are healing and it could have been MUCH worse, and the car as you say, really is just a bunch of parts, beautiful parts, but parts none the less.
Ill probably take that advice as many others have suggested and just build up the car from the rolling chassis.
Oh and dont worry, if im ever on the track again, it will be with head and neck restraints!
