IMHO it is a good thing that the body of the car crumbles as long as there is a cage built around the driver. For every little bit of energy that goes through the body of the car and weakens it the less energy is forwarded to the driver.
Might be a shame that a car is all crushed but I'd rather have as much cushion as possible and the energy has to go somewhere.

I dont know enough about the frame technology, but im sure it could be pulled straight again with a lot of work. I also have the matching original block in a plastic bag in my garage as well, so that the old engine and chassis could be reunited, but thats looking at a lot of work, for sure. The damage is very strange. the center tunnel is very distorted, but the cage has seemed to not have moved. All of the damage seems to be on the front clip. maybe this is all that it would need.
Mark, Glad you're ok... and that sucks!
But it doesn't look that bad to me....
Before you write off the chassis, you should let a good body shop (with a frame rack) have a look. they can do wonders, with a donor car.
Can you post a pic of the frame rails from underneath?
no H&N? this could have been a lot worse! you be lucky mon!

Brian,
in your last picture there, that is how I will be building my door bars too. But mine will be almost touching the door skin as I have gone way more into gutting the door. However what I am proposing is to cut the chassis to allow a bar to be added which protrudes into the lower chassis bar.
Or to add a bar which runs on the inside of this bar to reinforce the area and preventing it from being able to buckle in and force the drivers seat towards the roof (possible neck injury from compression).
Does this make sence to you?

Yes I get it.......the red NSX that MK races against has nascar bars like mine & an X inboard of that....its hard to see from the pics, but both door bars are inside the old door frame......they weren't designed to stiffen-support the body, just for side impact protection.....but I like your idea of reinforcing the frame rail to add strength....an extra mounting point going forward (to make 8 in mine) should help too
The 928 body is quite strong as is.....I was looking at an older Mustang that was racing against MK & was amazed at HOW MUCH extra bracing was added to stiffen up the chassis....

thats exactly right. I think the distortion and energy absorption, that did happen, helped lessen the blow.
Ill take a few more pics tonight before dark. with the fenders off, sure its still a mess but you can imagine things getting straightened. BUT, is it worth it because after straighting, things are much weaker in a unibody tub, right?
There was a main chassis guy from Penski that took a look at my car at the track. He said it didnt look that bad, but still a ton of work.
mk
I am not sure if I understand how you want to build the cage, might misinterpret. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Wow. This is the **** icing on my crap cake today.
Hope you are feeling well. +1 on health first car later.
If there is any prep needed on the roller (if it's comming from 928 Intl.) I'd be happy to help out. I'm only about 10 minutes from them...

Mark it's a shame accidents happen. Heed advice on getting checked out medically. Glad your up and around.
If you need some parts, let me know if I have some available. I will help if I have the parts you need. I may not of contributed to your motor, but I know you remember I helped with Scott's car.
Take care.

Thanks mike.
I agree! And it doesnt taste any better than I thought it would.
Im thinking of coming down to get that chassis in a couple of weeks, so maybe we can meet you there for a beer and some chassis loading?

Mark, I know a guy who can put in a cage that is "not very busy" right now. Same guy who did mine. He likes to work with gutted cars too.....let me know if you are interested.....
