Here you go, the moment of truth. The Holbert engne exposed.
Jim, are you watching? Still think there is something real special about the Holbert "one off" engine? Looks like stock parts to me.
Hey, look what i found in the engine.............. the lost cam tooth that never made it to the magnet.
notice how clean the pan is. thats untouched as it came off the engine.

That engine is surprisingly clean for all the heavy use it has seen. Both my engines were stained a yellowish/amber color inside. I guess Amsoil does pretty well in our engines.
Thanks for the pictures Mark and very good luck with your build up and the new engine!

That head surface doesn't look ready for a Cometic gasket.

(Disregard the valve seats, they were done horribly wrong) - but look at the head mating surface here:
Thats what you need (or better) for cometic.

jThanks C,
I was very surprised as well, especially, since i didnt have anything to do with its first 18,000miles of use .
the pictures dont do it justice, it looks brand new. no sludge, nothing!
When we took apart scots motor that was using vavoline racing oil for a season, it didnt look near as good and that was only one year!

Crack that girdle open..lets see some oiling pathways..and the crank oil pathway would be nice to see. So..amsoil is a high detergent oil...?
Either way...the Holbert motor was likely hand built under very tight tolerances..be interesting to get a few measurements off the bore/ring end gap/ etc..... Can you see any port matching/machining (intake or exhaust)?..
What is the final build of the new motor going to be? 6.4L with big valve heads?

Hi Mark,
I hope you're going to scrape off all that insulation from the firewall while the engine is pulled!
Tass928 posted on the 'weight savings' thread that all that junk is 10lbs!!
Best of luck with the build up
