Sorry for the bad news George! All of us who have road raced ar tracked our cars fear of something like this happening. But you survived and that's the main thing! Best of luck on your qwest to find a replacement engine.

Thanks Pete and Dave. I appreciate your support. I have no idea how
to handle this situation. I will be communicating with Dave about the
possibile fixes. But it seems I'll definitely be needing a new bottom end.
They'll be checking the heads next...

Bill, I replaced my rod bearings about 4 years ago. I guess they should be checked every so
often, especially when we run the cars like we do.
I do have a paypal account. jorj7 at sis125.berkeley.edu
But you've done so much for me and the car already, I don't know how I could express my
appreciation. Maybe I'll have to get you a piece of the old engine as a souvenir. From the
photos I got from Dave, there are definitently lots of souvenirs available...

It's disturbing to hear the bearings were only 4 years old. Also, I'm sure Mark K will be stunned that they failed despite Amsoil, but I don't want that little jocular observation to take away from the fact that I am sincerely sorry this happened. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My guess is that the rod bearings are the result of all the water in the pan not the cause of the failure of the motor. That much water in the pan points directly to a cracked block IMHO .

You need only look at the 944 to see what effect getting coolant in the oil can have. The 944 used an oil cooler on the side of the block which is INFAMOUS ....

Sorry to hear about your engine...what bearing failed? The shudder you describe is detonation...not a bearing going south. What was the eng temp at time of failure?
How much oil did come out and how much water? What was the ending oil level??? Did the oil have fuel in it? What do the rings look like? Lots of questions to answer.
How did the water let into the block? What failed?
Darn, no more $5K lenses for you this year, time to build a real engine and get that jacket!!!
BTW - I do have a 5.0 ltr crank if you want it.
