George, do you think the hesitation issue earlier was a fuel problem that led to a dangerous lean condition? best of luck with the repair. That is a neat way to blow an engine though and will be handy for repeating "yea, I remember the time I blew up an engine going 200 mph"

In the middle of it as we speak...no new holes on the outside of the engine.

That's a good sign.

What RPM were you doing at 189 MPH , stock tires it is about 6,500 with the 4speed 2.54 gears . Redline is only 6,600 any chance it was bouncing of the rev limiter ? because it cuts of the fuel to the engine...

Jim, taller 997 wheels and tires. I couldn't see the tach from my seat, being belted in with H&N device, etc. Definitely not bouncing the rev limiter. Similar feeling, but happened at full throttle acceleration, not at/near rev limiter.

Jim,
I think George has the same rear tire I do. It's 275/40/18 with a diameter of 26.6". he should be way under the rev limiter with that diameter.

I will let George fill in the details, suffice it to say that this engine is done. I am e-mailing him engine photos at the moment then going home.

That would be 6100rpms with 26.6" tire and 2.54 gears if 4th in an auto is 1:1

This thread begs for a "send in a few $$ for the Jorj engine fund" program. He makes it to all the NorCal and many other events. The photo documentation of all this stuff is first rate. Like Mark K, this is budget stuff and there generally aren't a lot of extra ones lying around. But a few of ours, collected, would ease some pain I'm sure. Anybody share that thought?

I haven't received the photos yet, but from what I hear, it looks like rod bearings were the
cause of the problem, not the head gasket. I guess Amsoil has it's limits also.

Bob,

Thanks for your kind words. You're right about running on a tight budget.
As I told Dave when we thought it was just the head gaskets, it'd take all
of my next year's budget to cover the cost. Now it looks like it's more likely
I'll be using the next 2 year's budget....

Steve and Charley, Thanks for your support. I truly appreciate your willingness
to help.
