In this case, the indicated engine number is the correct one for this VIN, BUT we haven't seen a picture of the actual stamp, nor the gearbox number stamp.
Sam, the car is legit... The seller is a bit of a marmite character, but well known in UK Porsche 928 circles...

I would be very suspicious with such a non factory stamped VIN. It's not even complete. What is the explanation?
The car seems to be nice, otherwise.

The VIN tag on the cowl looks legit, it's the 5th of the SE VINs, and everything in the pics matches the description in the database. That weird VIN on the fender support is pretty gamey, tho.

Owned by Paul Lacey in the UK - well respected in those circles.
I will ask him to comment if possible.

Thanks Roger, it is an interesting car!

I have placed a query with the auction house for photos of the engine and transaxle serial numbers as well as clarification of the chassis numbers in addition to what has been shown.

In their reply - we should expect a reply around the 7th when/after the car arrives. I'll update as soon as I receive any forthcoming documentation.

With Porsche, we have learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to documenting the rarities...

Enjoy!

I couldn't edit my post above, so I'll post here. I found that Forest Green Club Sport here:

I agree. It could be light blue to nearly purple.

But I'm fond of the forrest green too. I hope that my black one will not be a nightmare to maintain in good condition.

Samuel,

With a black car the paint can be a nightmare if you let it get dirty. Washing technique is paramount in maintenance,

Copious amounts of clean hot water and ultra clean and soft towels will aid in preventing the micro-scratches that are the bane of black car ownership. Black paint shows everything, but looks fantastic on these cars.

I recently clayed out the XX8 GT and with the Widebody and lack of rub strips, it looks fantastic. I'm sure that you will rarely get your Club Sport dirty (if ever) and it should be a rewarding stewardship for many years to come.

Can't wait for your next photo session as progress has no doubt - been steady.

Regards,

David

Well, the plan is actually to drive the car once finished
I have driven the first one 50,000 km and may beat this record if I keep the car once the restoration is over.

Nothing funky about the engine number. It’s an SP engine that matches the VIN.

The funky vin in the fender - the car was re-shelled by Porsche early on. Hence the “strange” vin with an X in it on the fender…

That put a lot of people off, which is bizarre - it was never a collector’s grade car, but one for driving. Given that the new shell was supplied and fitted by Porsche, why would someone care about something that has happened 35yrs ago and has no bearing on how the car drives NOW…

Actually, not explaining the strange VIN is a mistake.
Thank you for the explanation.

CS and SE were collector cars from new, except that nobody knew it

About reshelled cars, it isn't really a problem for me, IF there's a proof that the original shell was actually destroyed.
I have found the original shell of a friend's 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and it was a bad surprise for him. Lucky that he was able to buy it but he now owns two "cars" with one set of papers.

Of course you will drive it, my point is that you won't abuse it by driving it in winter or in dirty conditions, gravel roads and the like. Plus, we have the advantage of wrapping our cars with protective film if desired.

Over the last 25 plus years of ownership I have well over 400,000 miles of driving 928's. I have replaced torque tubes and done my half-shafts, disassembled & re-assembled my outlaw GT for a glass out repaint, installed carbon dashboards and done motor mounts (more work than I can recount). Now I am unfortunately physically limited from these rewarding activities. All because of an allergic reaction to statins...

Life goes on - - - Drive them and enjoy them as you see fit.

Regards

In my opinion, all 928's have gained collector status... CS's & SE's are at or near the top of the list in terms of desirability...
